We stopped by late on a Saturday afternoon and were surprised by how busy the restaurant still was. The menu thankfully had English translations and we decided to try a few of the recommended dishes and were really impressed! Can highly recommend the baked eggplant dish! There were hundreds of dishes on the menu so it warrants a second visit.... More

Went for dinner with great expectations and we have not been disappointed. Suggest you make reservations as the restaurant was packed and there was a long lineup. Great place if you like spicy food Strongly recommend

Spicy Chinese restaurants in Shanghai. Pork chops are a must and also the grilled shrimps are really tasty. I always had good dinner here and I really recommend this place also because the price is reasonable: around 120 rmb per person. A must in the city!

This is seriously the only restaurant I miss in Shanghai and I cannot wait till my next trip to Shanghai so I can dine in this restaurant again! Just a heads up - This restaurant is filled with foreigners, which you may feel that it’s a tourist trap. But for people who don’t fancy restaurants the locals frequent in Shanghai... More

Came here with a big group of locals and visitors and managed to get a private room to ourselves. The food was very good and the resturant ex pat friendly. There are pictures and there is a mix of very local delicacy (e.g. chicken feet) And more basic things like cauliflower and tofu etc. The food is spicy but not... More

We ate here with a colleague from Shanghai who took us out here. Traditional ambiance, mix of locals and westerns / tourists. We had the ribs, which had a unique taste. The grilled vegetables were great as well. I would surely come back and recommend this place when you visit Shanghai.

This was stomping ground ten years ago. I had to take my wife since I told her about this years past. The same still have the same great food. Although foreigners like myself seemed to be in greater numbers than locals. The stew five layer pork is a must. It's Chairman Mao's favorite. Pork ribs with chili and anise are... More

The decoration there would give you a Hunan feel and whet your appetite. The spicy spare ribs which is their signature dish is very good but a bit too small and overpriced. Most of the food are spicy but you could still find some non-spicy ones. On the whole, a restaurant which is worth trying.

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
