This is a bright clean and welcoming place to spend a few hours. The selection of breads/cakes and food offerings to eat on site or take out are really good quality. If you are looking for a good western style breakfast, this is the place. We had breakfast and lunch here a couple of times during our stay and were... More

This is a very well organised chain of western style bakery/cafes. Good choices, good food, good wifi and good staff. This branch opens early so good if on a morning power walk. Later in the day it can be very busy - and hard to find tables. Not super cheap but worth it.

We went here for breakfast on 3 of the 4 nights we spent in Shanghai. The food here is simply amazing. This is one of a few branches of baker and spice who are part of the Wagus group who have a number of cafes in Shanghai. Don't expect to see many locals here though, as each time we went... More

They have a good selection of sandwiches and cakes. The staff spoke a decent amount of English and were helpful. Service was quite fast.

This is an AWESOME bakery and eat-in café. Whole grain breads, croissant, breakfast is GREAT and hearty. Espresso drinks and skilled baristas. Take out includes salads, quiches, sandwiches. Chilled crowd of Europeans and hip Chinese with a few Americans hang out all day and into the evening. Extremely eclectic selection of wines from all over the world at accessable price... More

Without a doubt one of the best bakeries we've had the pleasure of going to in Asia. Feel the need for one of the best triple chocolate chip cookies or a white chocolate and cranberry scone? Excellent tea and coffee and a great atmosphere - Baker & Spice is for you. A mix of local and expat diners and was... More

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
