When you walk into Mayita in Shanghai, you walk into an upscale Californian Mexican oasis. The ambiance is warm, inviting an familiar. The staff are friendly, attentive, and courteous. The star however, is the food. Rarely have I been to a restaurant where every dish was absolutely perfect, this was a rare time. Meats melted in your mouth, cooked perfectly. Everything... More

Given you don't quite find the real deal as far as Mexican food goes in SH, this place is the furthest of all. Maybe they should call it "Mexican INSPIRED". If you want more authentic flavor, look elsewhere.

Visited Maya for brunch on Saturday. Very nice atmosphere and great food. I would especially comment on the Churros which were really delicious. On another note the waiters are nothing special: no smile, take out plates even if not everyone has finished.... Seems only the owner or main manager who welcome us was above all. Finally I wonder why they... More

Everything about this place is amazing. The food, service, and ambiance are perfect. The quality and flavors of the food can't be beat. This is possibly the best Mexican restaurant I've been to out of numerous countries - to include Mexico!! It's available for delivery through Sherpa, but I would suggest enjoying the experience of the restaurant!

We shared some guacole to start which was really good. I tried the lamb fajitas based on a recommendation from the waiter and they were excellent! Very good flavor, lots of food, more than I could finish and I don't like to leave food on my plate. My coworkers tried the duck breast and the chicken enchiladas and both really... More

I've been to Maya on several occasions for brunch and dinner. While most of everything I've had is great, brunch by far is the best value and delicious. Some reviews have called Maya expensive, and you can rack up quite a bill with a large group, but brunch seems right on the money. Great ambiance and good service.

We stopped for a light supper and enjoyed cold beers and a delicious taco salad. Despite the evident rush and call for tables we were not pushed out quickly. All the food that passed us from the open kitchen looked amazing. Bit hard to find, but if your taxi can get you to the gate the guard will point you... More

Best guacamole and tortilla chips in China. Ceviche was delicious, margarita pitcher is the way to go. If you are a spicy lover must try the home habanero sauce. The carne asada and skirt steak are great! Chocolate lava cake and warm churros are to die for!

Been there a couple of times now. I love south american food, and Maya excel in this. Very good wine card as well, you have to expect a premium price for Shanghai (~200 RMB/pers min.) I always enjoy going back there as I know I will have great food in an very nice atmosphere.

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
