I was there on my own, and still enjoyed the classic menu, with local offerings. Do try the basic salad - it was AMAZING! The hairy crabs are in season, and are not to miss. The experience was classic Chinese. The service was impeccable. The ambiance was elegant. The food, superb. I think all in, as I had a 3... More

We stayed at the Fairmont, which is recently restored to its historic grandeur. The restaurant was a pleasant surprise--we went for the view, but loved the service. The food was very good, and reasonably priced. We're returning for Peking Duck tonight!

Food: We went there for lunch. You can choose 3-5 courses. Very tasty. Service: All good and very helpful. You can reserve your table online. Design: Don't expect it's a modern design or very spacious - Peace Hotel is an old, historical building. View: You can go to the balcony to look at the views of the Bund and Pudong... More

The Cathay Room in the Peach Fairmount Hotel offers a delicious set lunch menu with lovely views of Pudong. A great place for a ladies lunch or business dining, the Beau Arts style of the restaurant is charming and provides intimate spaces for discussion in a bright environment. Attentive service, as well.

After eating Chinese food for fifteen days while touring China, we treated ourselves for a good solid three course dinner at the Cathay room with views overlooking the Bund and Pudong skyline. I had egg salad followed by rack of lamb then carrot cake with ice cream. It was all presented beautifully and so delicious add to that the most... More

First of all, the setting is not as romantic as I would have thought. It's quite a small room, and the view from the inside is hard to comment on. However if you are here with a big group, ready to have fun, then it could be a memorable brunch because the champagne keeps on flowing. In terms of food,... More

Sat outside for a quick meal and enjoyed the views of The Bund at night. It was worth going up just for that. Food was good and the service excellent. Loved the big rattan chairs!

First of all the hotel is beautiful, and the view is amazing! The buffet choice is very wide and ingredients fresh. Atmosphere is quite and relaxed. We loved every single dish, we'll go back to celebrate other family occasions.

The restaurant has many positives, vis-a-vis location, view, ambience, quality of food etc. But one attribute that completely stands out is their attitude whereby they try and satisfy their client's needs completely. We walk into the restaurant at a time when they were taking their last order. We also had a few special requests. They made us feel completely at... More

Step back into an era of European fine-dining elegance, with stellar service and sparkling Bund views from the terrace, The Cathay Room transports guests back almost a century in time to a glamorous bygone era. The Cathay Room has been Shanghai’s premier dining address since the 30's, not only for its food delicacies but also for its status as a much celebrated, high profile social institution. Originally established as the Grill House in 1933, the Cathay Room was where hotel founder and eccentric global traveller, Sir Victor Sassoon, dined with his highbrow friends in true style. Global leaders, celebrities and socialites came for the perfect dining experience, enjoying the exceptional quality of service and unsurpassed Bund panoramas. Today, the revived Cathay Room embodies the same values of culinary vision, service excellence and social dining. Chef Joshua selects the finest seasonal ingredients from organic and ecological producers for her inspired creations that overwhelm guests’ taste buds with a dash of haute cuisine flair. Lunch Set Menu is served from 12 pm until 2:30 pm. Authentic European classics and contemporary creations highlight premium cuts of meat and seafood accompanied by fresh seasonal vegetables and salads. Since developing its passion for excellence in 1929, The Cathay Room’s extensive wine list features more than 250 European and New World labels, including a large selection of medium and full-bodied reds for perfect matching of the prime cuts of meat.

Staying in The Bund

Neighbourhood Profile
The Bund
While there are certainly many other “bunds” in the world, “the Bund” refers to Shanghai’s famous waterfront. The area’s Gothic, Art Deco and Beaux Arts monoliths were built when it was part of the Shanghai International Settlement run by the British and Americans. The atmosphere of colonial-era luxury has endured over time and is now found in the five-star hotels, luxury brand boutiques and expensive restaurants that can be found within the historic buildings. A cultural center has built up away from the water and some of Shanghai’s best art galleries and museums are housed close to the Bund. Nighttime views of Pudong and the rest of the city also make for a great backdrop at the many rooftop clubs.
