Even though smoking has been banned in Shanghai restaurants, it just isn't enforced in this place. Plus, the service is beyond horrible. We, (and I was with local Chinese speaking people), sat in this restaurant for over 30 minutes without a server coming over to us....and the place was over half empty. Needless to say, we left and would never... More

This place is offering very good food that make us remember that Sichuan also is a cuisine in China. Shanghai has many nice restaurants with good food, but there is something special with the spicy Sichuan food. Pin Chuan serves it in a friendly tone and good service. Bon appetite!

We have been going to Pin Chuan for many years as a family. We love their food. Very good quality and the service is good. They don't speak much English, but they are very helpful. Must try the fish with red chili, green beans and chicken with cashew. Stay away from the mapo tofu. Use to be really good, but... More

The Sichuan kitchen is one of my favourite chinese kitchens. Had a wide selection of different dishes - fish, pork, veggies, frog and tofu. The spice level is clearly marked in the well illustrated menu. Which is both in English and Chinese. The food was tasty, but the pork ribs were slightly dry. The fish, frog and veggies were good.... Good restaurant on the top floor of an upscale mall. Not bad at all - just not a very authentic Sichuan experience. Definitely a slice of modern Shanghai. It's certainly spicy so perfect for those of you seeking a chili fix. Good place to go if you are close and hungry, but probably not worth driving across town for.

Went to Pinchuan many times in the last few years. Very good service for both dinner and lunch. Also good place for entertaining guests from overseas. I know their dishes have been adapted for foreigners but we enjoyed going there.

We ate at a branch is on the top floor of Plaza 66. The menu has delectable Sichuan options. I love spicy food but some dishes were just plain old too hot for me. The service here is not the best, and English is very limited, although the menus are in English. You will want to come with large water... More

I had a dinner here for business reasons. We ordered lot of typical Sichuan classics. I think 8 dishes. Nothing was good, but everything was pricey. Ma po doufu was terrible and fried rice really dry with no taste. Their cat fish had lot of bones, but no much taste either. There are lot of better Sichuan restaurants around Shanghai.... More

Very much enjoy coming to Pinchuan when visiting Shanghai. Great Sichuan food, reasonably priced for this nice restaurant. Not so many "lau weis" (foreigners) as in some other popular establishments. Best to visit in a group of 4 or more (chinese style), as you then can order and taste more dishes.

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
