Full disclosure: I cannot tell what good Yunnanese food tastes like, but Lost Heaven dishes did impressed me. Tastes were very rich and varied. I loved it....Went to the Bund branch with a business colleague and dinner was the highlight of our trip food-wise. We tried a bit of everything. You can tell this is a tourist/expat/business gathering place. The... More

This is an overpriced tourist trap for laowai who do not know better. There is nothing it has over authentic neighborhood places that are 20% of the price. If you favor dim lighting and atmosphere over quality (think W hotels) then you might like this place, but to be clear it is American Chinese food reformatted to be "Chinese." It... More

Lost Heaven in Gaoyou road is one of my favorite restaurants in Shanghai. In my humble opinion, this is the best example of Yunnan cuisine in town. To give you a very high level idea: it's a blend between Hunan, Sichuan with Burma contamination ( I am sure that my friends will think that my description is somehow reductive) What... More

We almost didn't get to enjoy Lost Heaven as the door staff tried to turn us away when we said we had no booking. But when we insisted we could wait for a table we were escorted upstairs where the restaurant was half empty and we had a huge 6 person table all to ourselves! So a bemusing start to... More

Huge restaurant and very busy. Yunnan cuisine - almost with a fusion. Service was okay and pricing okay, although maybe on the higher end for what you get. Good restaurant for groups.

We had read reviews on this place and were excited about eating here. The decore is amazing but the food was not up to expectations . It was ok but certainly not great. The staff were attentive and the ambience was there but the food was a let down.

Have been there many times and we love the food. Our favourites are the tea leaf salad, Burmese samosas and the steamed cod. Nice interiors and interesting bathroom. Especially nice place to take friends from out of town.

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
