This fine dining restaurant in the Crowne Plaza is perfect for a special dinner in Chennai. Live traditional musicians set the scene, the staff are friendly and helpful with explaining dishes and the presentation is faultless. The dishes are listed by the region of South India they originate from. It is a great chance to taste a variety of styles. It’s not cheap but it’s a great experience and dining here you join a list of celebrities such as Bill Gates, Sachin Tendulkar and many others.

Review of Dhakshin Restuarant in Adayar Park Crowne plaza

Dakshin offers rich culinary traditions from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka and Telangana. Dakshin boasts of having a legacy where chefs with experience of 30 years turn out sumptuous delicacies using traditional and authentic methods. The ambiance with instrumental music and couteous waiters in traditional attires enhances the dining experience . The writer recalls the early days of dining in Dhakshin when it was thrown open to public . Now The Adyar Park is owned by thr Goel family originally engaged in garment business ,in tie up with ITC . Adayar Park was originally conceived by industrialist Late T T Vasu of TT Krihnamachari group of companies . When Dhakshin opened he even transferred his personal Chef of many years from his home to this restuarant to design the South Indian Menu which is still being adopted with little tweaking here and there . Family Thali lunch at Dhakshin used to be an elaborate affair with so many starters and main dishes that would compliment the main dish and local desert . After ITC exited from managing this hotel consequent to starting of their own luxury ITC grand Chola ,the owners signed up with Crowne plaza group to continue to manage this Adayar park Hotel. The writer with his better half decided to dine here after many years and ordered kerala menu comprising of Appam ,Iddiappam with Vegetable Kurma and Vegetabke stew followed by traditional Thayir Sadam or curd rice. The kurma offerred was not that great but the other items were fine .But some how I felt it was not tasting the same as the first chef used to turn out these 30 years ago.Iced lemon tea not on menu but it was real cool . The charges for vegetarian items ordered I find is on rather higher side considering the portions being served. We were set back by Rs 1800 for just the above items & Lemon Soda. But the dining experience in this restuarant that strictky follows covid protocols was quite pleasant although it was leave for live music, on Tuesdays. To visitors of Chennai who has not been to Dhakshin ,I would suggest they should try out this restuarant if they want to taste authentic & good south Indian cuisine thats on offer here . The experience would be well worth it!

Authentic India experience...in a hotel!

My colleague and I were visiting India for work and only had a few hours of free time. We were eager to have an authentic Indian lunch that would be safe for us to eat. Our hotel recommended Dakshin right away and we were so impressed! We got the the vegetarian sampler and were presented with a rich variety of delicious appetizers, dishes, breads and rice, all served on a banana leaf tray. The musical performance only added to the richness of the experience. Lunch does take a while so make sure you leave at least 90 min to 2 hours. Highly recommend!

Excellent food coupled with wonderful service

It’s always a pleasure dining here thanks to the great food and service. Our most recent visit was for lunch and as usual, the food did not disappoint . What made our experience better was the excellent service received from Mr. Jegan and Mr. Guna. Their attentiveness and desire to make sure we’ve eaten until we could eat no more is appreciated. Would definitely recommend Dakshin for an authentic South Indian dining experience.

Desserts, no thanks

Celebrating a team which had some great work brought us to Dakshin for lunch. Ambience was standard, no surprises as this was not my first rodeo here. This week they were offering a set meal curated by a visiting chef. Very elaborate and started off well with the starters in both veg and non-veg meals. An array of 4-5 chutneys were served as dips. Banana dosas tasted well and vada curry on coin parotta connected well. Sambar rice was better than puliogare (which will always be a hit or a miss). Service was good considering the number of people and range of dishes/accompaniments which had to be served. This was going pretty well. I could see some fatigue as the main course was coming to an end. Then came the desserts probably curated for this meal, a variant of popular desserts, it seemed like. I ate most of one, and tasted the other. The desserts just raised one question “just why?” What was the need for those two excuses, they might just offered elaneer payasam or some other Chennai specialty? The desserts left a bad taste in the mouth and I wanted that coffee badly or the pan. Overall 5 for the service. 3.5 for the overall meal (cant have a bad taste in the mouth). Thanks but no thanks.

Not half as good as it used to be

I first came here 6 years ago and was absolutely blown away by the food quality and taste. Unfortunately Dakshin no longer seems to uphold its impeccable standard as my latest meal here was not up to the mark in terms of flavour and variety. We opted for the thalis (both veg and non veg) and only the banana dosa, poriyal, and one chicken item stood out. The ice cream had a weird mix of flavours which didn't seem to balance each other well, and the dal payasam was extremely disappointing. The upside is that the portions seem unlimited and the staff generous with our requests. Overall, not really worth the money paid for the thalis. Some of the servers also need to wear their mask properly at all times.

Warm Hospitality with Delicious Food- Highly recommend Veg Thaali

We went to Dakshin to celebrate my home coming after marriage to a wonderful family in Chennai. Coming from Northern Part of the country- Delhi , I have been exposed to limited conventional South Indian Food. We ordered Vegetarian Thali as my family was keen to make me try the various delicacies and I must say I enjoyed every bit of it. Venue - Menu - Service and Company was top notch! One Pro tip is to taste every item as the variety is enormous and everything is so good that its hard to choose. The serving staff was extremely generous to share more about each dish that was being served. The highlight point was when the Restaurant Chef : Chef Vijay and Supervisor: Suresh with serving staff Guna surprised us with a Congratulations Cake to celebrate my wedding; as a token for Happy home coming. I was deeply moved by their warm gesture. Thank you making such a memorable evening! I am sure to keep coming to this place again and again!

Mophla it's Kerala cusine is basically north Kerala authentic food I had puttu,pathri,kadla curry .Desserts elai adai (banana leaf stuffing)& elaneer payasam it was so yummy 😋 this festival limited days only Service awesome mr.Gunasekaran was recommended very good & clearly must try this food. Most important my table waiter Gunasekaran is wearing proper gloves, mask all the staff maintaing the social distance I saw many staffs they using sanitizer each every one hour House keeping staff also cleaning every time dakshin corridoor & elevator. security man also checking the temperature before entering the hotel very safety & hygiene Thank you all The staffs & good mangement well done keep it up be safe 👍

Great food and amazingly warm service

This is a fantastic restaurant within the Crown Plaza Hotel Adyar Park. The food is amazing and the ambience is grand, with a touch of live music on a Friday evening. Almost everything we had on the menu was very tasty, but the thali is to die for. We came here 4 time during our stay and were never disappointed. Remember to come with enough space in your tummies though :-) Service is very warm, the staff is exceptionally friendly and they treated us like we were guests in their house. I would like to call out Satish, who always made sure that our son had the perfect food with just the right level on spice (or should I say non-spice). In summary, this place is a must visit.

Ramesh and Suresh were the two staffs who attended to us. The way they attended us made us not just to explore wide variety of foods but also gave us the josh to eat 5 times more than what we usually do....Excellent hospitality. Authentic local cuisine

This restaurant is mentioned in almost all the top places to eat in Chennai lists. So we decided to go here as we had few hours to kill in Chennai before catching our flight. Definitely far from the airport - so could have looked at a better option from that perspective. We had a good time at the restaurant. The waiting staff was more than helpful to make us decide on our order by explaining what pairs well, ingredients etc. We had Malabari parantha, appam, chicken and fish - all was great with a backdrop of classical live music.

Iconic!

One of the most iconic South Indian restaurants, Dakshin has maintained their quality and service levels over the years. We didn't hesitate to choose Dakshin as the venue of our school reunion dinner with guests coming from different places. The food was tasty and the attentive service made sure everyone was comfortable. We had ordered for both vegetarian and non-vegetarian thalis. The dishes were well presented. Prawns fry was a standout dish. Live music was played almost for 3 hours non-stop, hats off to the extremely talented musicians. We can't wait to go back again!

Dinner at Dakshin

We went out for dinner during the Sangamam festival and had a large spread in front of us. The dinner thalis has everything from banana dosas and mini adais to idiyappam, appam, parotta, rice. We ended the meal with three delicious desserts- an original three flavoured ice cream- jackfruit, mango and banana.

One of best Restaurant I have ever seen thats in our heart of chennai city. Foods taste are the best quality. Environment with performers playing music,is great feeling , definitely should experience atleast once. Tiger Prawn dish is THE BEST dish I have tasted ,there dailyspecials have authentic taste. we are from Singapore. extraordinary hospitality of the waiters Sathish and Manikandan. Delicious food was served in such a polite manner with detailed description of each dish. The waiters described the dish in such a mouth-watering way. The best restaurant we have been to. Excellent service.
