Took the trouble to visit this place after hearing about it from my friends and the reviews. As one can see, it is very popular. The mess is situated in an alley. It is only open for a few hours in the morning and the...evening. Cars are a big no. Even parking in the main street leading to the alley is not recommended as the local shop keepers complain. The seating consists of 4 tables of 4 chairs each - total 16 can be seated at one time. There was already a queue in place when we went early in the morning around 7.30. A guy takes down your name with the number of people. The way the system works is that they collect 16 people at one time and replace them with the 16 who just finished their breakfast. Food is on a banana leaf. The menu is simple. Starts with hot Pongal, followed by crisp Medu Vadai and then hot fluffy Idlis. Each one has to take what he wishes from the server who brings the dishes one by one. Liquid chutney and sambhar is provided along with the items. As an extra, you can order the thick coconut chutney and Millagai Podi with oil. As for the taste - the pongal was good and so too were the vadai and idlis. The sambhar was a big let down - absolutely dismal. The thick chutney was also below par. The liquid chutney and the podi were mediocre. Each cycle of breakfast takes around 20 minutes. You are asked if you need coffee towards the end of your breakfast and if you need one, it is served in the alley outside the mess. The filter coffee was superb and strong. The bill is calculated by the guy outside by you telling him what you ate and whether you asked for the thick chutney and the podi, We went as a group of three and the cost came to a reasonable Rs 400.00. What surprised me is that though the people who are running this long standing mess successfully for many years, they have not bothered to invest and improve the ambience and decor. The alley way is sure to stink when there is water stagnation after rains and the entry to the mess is cluttered. All in all, in my honest opinion, I found that this mess is a bit overrated. It is reasonably good but not something you cannot miss. Also, I would not recommend taking your family here.More

This place is in a small street with no parking. It’s a very small place with around 15 seats only. There is usually a pretty long wait as it is a popular restaurant. The place is open limited time daily and very limited menu selection...of South Indian delicacies. The food is good and the service is very good. After having our fill of rava dosa, bonda and excellent coffee, I was thrown away by the bill which was puny. They don’t even provide you a bill, you will just have to tell them what you ate and pay them. Worth the visit.More

Went on 4 December 2019 after seeing a video about this mess. It is in a narrow lane .you need to park the vehicle in the main Road arundale road. We ordered Bonda which was good but the chutney and sambhar(so called) was below the...expectations. sweet- gulab jamun was good. Filter coffee was better than the above. cost wise pocket friendly.May be my expectations were more after the reviews.More

I went for a saturday breakfast and as expected there was heavy rush. One good thing is the names are noted & called as per the order. The morning menu is limited - idly, vada & pongal. The idly and vada was amazing and the...sambar n chutney were good. Coffee was too good!! The restaurant have retained the same place for years and stayed away from expansion which helps in providing the authentic n consistent taste. The hotel is in a small lane (google map was perfect). There were already people waiting outside. A set of people had already gone in. A person at the door took down my name and told that it would take some time. Got to go...in at 7:15 am. 4 tables with 4 chairs each - that is the seating. Idly, vadai, pongal, 3 varieties of chutney (solid, liquid and kara) and sambar. the solid chutney and idly podi/ghee are extra. They serve the items one by one and you can decide what to have and what not. TAsted one of everything. It was amazing. Coffee was served outside (in the lane). Somehow the server knows who has ordered coffee and gives it to them outside. Payment - it is left to you to calculate the amount and pay - Rs. 30 for 2 idlys, 10 for vadai, 40 for pongal, 20 podi/chutney. 20 for coffee. Definitely worth the wait. on Sundays, they open at 6:30, other days at 7. You can also get the food packed. And also eat in the express lane - stand and eat !!.
