I repeat it again, there really is a serious dearth of authentic south Indian restaurants in Mumbai, The ones that claim to be and are made to be believed to be the ones, in essence, are standard run of the mill Shetty hotels that do...no justice to gourmets who know what south Indian food tastes like and who can tell the difference in the flavors and taste of the four different states of Karnataka, Andhra, Tamil Nadu and Kerala (I don't consider Telangana a culturally or gastronomically a unique state at all except for the fact that Hyderabad with its Biryani happens to be it's Capital ). The only restaurant in Mumbai that could justly call itself as Andhra restaurant, the " Gongura" at Juhu junction sadly closed down supposedly due to lack of patronage, one of the disadvantages it had was its only vegetarian fare. Avakaya at Kandivali East to a large extent seems to fill the void, though just a few kilometers away from my home, wasn't aware of its existence until just before the start of Covid lockdown, had already dined there twice before the start of lockdown, The first time, My litmus test " The Thali" tasted just the way it should be, " Like a typical Andhra Thali" the side dishes like Chettinad mutton and others were good too, Next visit, found a noticeable difference especially a marked reduction in the spice level, talked to the Owner who normally is around and as expected learned from him that he was forced to do it due to customer palate. Could understand the dilemma of the poor guy. this is how the originality of flavors is lost. Thanked God for the sidekicks like on the table like the Gongura Pachadi, Malaga Podi, Majjiga Mirappakai who were struggling to retain their original form in that four bowled stand on the table, Planning to either order or visit again to gulp down some hot sips of Rasam down the throat to ward off CoronaMore

Recently visited Aavakay - The Andhra Kitchen located in Kandivali. One of the finest places in that area serving authentic Andhra Cuisine. Beautiful ambience, comfortable seating, great service and delicious food. We started off with pink mint mocktail and miriyala rasam. Moving on in starter...we tried mirapakay bhajji, curry leaf paneer & masala vada. Curry leaf paneer was my personal favourite amazing flavour and taste definitely a must try here. In Main course we tried their mixed veg talimpu & gutti vankaya kura and veg aavakay biryani. In Dessert we tried the Paruppu payasam. This classic dessert is made of moong dal, jaggery and coconut milk. A perfect dessert to complete your meal. Overall experience was amazing. The food here is delicious. Must visit.More

Aavakay is a restaurant based in Kandivali which serves some of the best dishes from Andhra cuisine. It is one of the very few restaurants that are available in Mumbai and since I love food from Andhra Pradesh, I decided to visit it. The place...is very spacious, ambiance is really traditional and their service is outstanding. Dine in Rating of Aavakay, Kandivali: Date: 19th August 2018 Time: 7:30pm Please check the rating for each dish we ordered based on various factors: 1) Aloo 65 – Rs. 175 Quality – 4/5 Portion Size – 4/5 Taste – 3.5/5 Value for Money – 4/5 Overall – 4/5 2) Kanda Bachali Kura – Rs. 199 Quality – 4.5/5 Portion Size – 4.5/5 Taste – 4.5/5 Value for Money – 5/5 Overall – 4.5/5 3) Andhra Veg. In appetizer, we ordered Aloo-65 which was spicy, delicious and tasted perfect with chapathi. In the main course we ordered Kanda Bachali Kura which is a gravy based dish Pohi Leaves & Yam. This dish had right amount of spice, excellent overall taste and we all loved every bite of it. This dish can make you fall in love with the Andhra cuisine instantly. They do have Punjabi dishes also but I would recommend here to stick to Andhra special dishes. We also tried their Veg. Andhra Pulao which was also delicious, very low on oil and had lot of vegetables making it a perfect dish to end the meal with. They provide a special box containing masalas and pickle on the table and each thing in that box makes your dish super delicious. Thank you again for such a wonderful experience. The Avakay is a hidden gem! A Big Shout out to Zomato Gold for showing us the very first Authentic Andhra Restaurant in Mumbai. Our thought when we zeroed down to this place was that we were tired of cliché North Indian, Chinese , Italian...cusines, and wanted to try something new and different. When we think about South Indian food we get Idli - dosa and the usual stuff. But this Place is Going to Change your opinion about South Indian cusinie once and for all. The Name :- Aavakay, its a pickle, yes! A spicy one, and you have to try it when you visit there as they serve it with all the dishes. What We Had :- 1) Kodi Shorba. :- 3.5 2) Andhra Kodi Vepudu. :- 4.0 3) Malbari Paratha. :- 4.0 4) Semiya Payasam. 4.5 5) Chickem Hyderbadi Biryani 5.0 Kodi Shorba - it has that aroma and the royal feeling. Tastes really awesome! Andhra Kodi Vepudu - Thick sppicy gravy with Authentic Andhra Taste. Its a must try! Malbari Paratha - this one is a real malbari paratha and much diffrent than what we get at normal restaurants. Semiya Payasam - it is basically a dessert , it's more like Kheer, but tastes similar to maharashtrian puran poli but its in liquid form and it has the heavenly feeling thats unmatched! Hyderabadi Biryani - No! Its not Green, this biryani is extremely authentic as they have a biryani chef who has come from hyderbad and he makes the amazing lip-smacking heavenly hyderabadi biryani.More

Think about some good Andhra restaurants in Mumbai/Thane. It's difficult because there are hardly any. Aavakay is quite close to a good Andhra restaurant. Though it's not similar to Nagarjuna which is popular for Andhra meals, this place serves many authentic non veg starters and...main course items. Hospitality is good and restaurant has comfortable seatings. Overall, if you are craving fo Andhra food and you are close to Kandivali, you can definitely come sider this place.More

Aavakay.....A great food joint with very decent interiors ,a calm & cool ambiance in Thakur Village, Kandivali(E). For the die hard foodie in me ,Celebrating my birthday with our family of 5 at this place could not have been better than this.We had a combo...of veg & non veg dishes... Giving here is a sneak peak to the dishes which proved to be an amazing treat to the taste buds.. 1.MIRAYALA RASAM.....This spicy & sour soup made with tamarind, tomatoes, pepper & south Indian spices proved to be a great appetizer. 2. CHICKEN 65.....This popular preparation of deep fried chicken with onion , ginger, curry leaves & yogurt was amazingly lip smacking. 3.ANDHRA MAMASAM MASALA....This spicy , rich Mutton gravy cooked in Andhra style was beyond my imagination. 4. BHENDAKAYA PEANUT VEPUDU..... I never found ladyfinger tasting so good. This deliciously crispy & tangy stir fried ladyfingers tasted amazing with peanuts & spices. 5.TOMATO RICE....For my septuagenarian mom this all time Andhra household favorite proved to be a comfort food. The masalas & the tomatoes gave a perfect flavour to the rice. 6.ANDHRA ROYYALU PRAWNS PULAO......in itself was so unique with the masalas perfectly blended & absorbed in the prawns. It tasted heavenly with layered MALABARI PARATHA. 7. PANEER PARATHA...The Paneer lover in me never leave a restaurant without having a Paneer dish. But with the above elaborate order I had to settle only with bites of it as the tummy gave a no entry signal. But let me tell you this over sized Paratha was fortified with spicy paneer to the best possible extent. Sorry Aavakay.... hence could not try the Desserts... But will surely come back for it very soon . Before signing off just a few more addends... The Menu covers a whole lot of North Indian Food too like the Tomato Soup, Mix Veg Pakodas, Paneer Butter Masala, Kadai Paneer, Kaju Paneer, Paneer Dopyaaza, Corn & Mushroom Masala ,DalTadka ,Dal Fry & varieties of Parathas in Aloo & Gobhi .Hence, North Indian Food Lover will also never be disappointed here . The Tray of the PODI'S truly enhanced & took the the taste to the next level. The Manager Mr. Subhash was kind enough to explain the contents of each Podi & also narrated us the story of how the name Chicken 65 originated. Thanks Mr. Subhash for enriching & enlightening our food Knowledge. Only one request here please start serving the Exotic Andhra thali for Dinner too... as you do it for lunch... So here goes my Rating... Ambiance and Service-5/5 Food-5/5 Value for Money-5/5 Looking forward to my next visit...to Aavakay...More

A newly opened fine dining resturant in Kandivali food hub-Thakur village. Aavakay-The Andhra Kitchen as the name implies specializes for authentic Andhra cuisine. It is one of its kind place for fine dining. Location/Ambiance: It is conveniently located considering crowd from Inox multiplex and foodies...of Thakur village. Ambience is classy with luxurious confortable sofas. It is divided into compartments separated by pillars. Soothing background music adds to the experience. Menu: They provide 4 different spices and 2 pickles which enhances the dining experience. They also give complimentary fried kurkure. Really crispy and in good portion. Analysis- > Mirapakay baji - Mirchi pakoda stuffed with onions, tomato and chilli powder. I sprinkled some of the add on masala served alongside. They really enhanced the taste and flavour. > Lemon coriander soup- Diced veges simmered in veg broth. Consistency was thick and tastewise really good. > Masala wada: Deep fried wada made of chana dal and mix of spices. Wadas were sumptuous, fluffy and crunchy on oustside. Aftertaste was spicy. Highly recommended! > Drumstick sambar- Popular South Indian dish- cooked with toor dal, chopped onion and tomatoes. Drumsticks were properly cooked. Really delicious, flavorful and healthy sambar. > Tomato rice- Masala rice made with tomato, onion, dal and spices. It was slightly spicy but taste extremely good. Comfort food. Overall this place can be visited for quality family fine dine experience. Definitely vising in near future to try their non veg food and other dishes.More
