I visited this restaurant out of sheer luck as it was the closest to the business meeting I had attended and I was super hungry. When I reached the place, there was a decent crowd of guests and most of them were having thali. So I ordered one for myself as they said it's the best. The thali has assorted items, however, the experience is not the same as other restaurants that serve only thalis. The servers here are limited and they bring everything to your table in a rather very clumsy way. It's almost like something will drop from their hands at any moment and they are doing a fine balancing act with various things. The service is very slow for a thali and you can expect to wait for about 15 minutes, which again is counter productive to the "experience of having a thali". Overall, it is a decent place if you are around in that area and want something to fill your stomach. This is not a traditional thali joint, but is thriving on being the only one in that area. So there is a decent and rather fairly noisy crowd.

We really enjoyed the Gujarati Thali we ate at Samrat Veg Restaurant. The wait staff were very attentive, and continually brought around extra top ups. The Thali was really tasty - one of the best we’ve eaten! Thank you

Our guide recommended it as a top vegetarian restaurant and we were not disappointed. One pays a flat price like at a dim sum and the foods keeps coming not always sure what we were getting but the flavors were wonderful. Excellent service great experience .

I had an opportunity of dining at this restaurant. Its purely vegetarian catering gujrati, jain, punjabi food. People mainly come for the gujrati thali which is Rs. 350 on week days. Dal, kadhi, were tasty, puri they serve after chapatis which means people would eat less of it. Curries of potato was OK in taste, one of the curries was stale and I informed the waiter about it. The most weird part is they have deployed many waiters that stand and stare while one eats. This needs improvement, as Customers feel intimidated. Its one of the oldest restaurants in the chuchgate area. Couple of years back, the quality was really good, but recently it seems they have compromised hugely on quality compared to the prices of each dish. Nothing special to miss!!!

I was in Churchgate after 25 + years with my wife and wanting to please her. Samrat is perfect for such occasions. Good food, not too oily (even the undhiyu), the gulab jamun was exquisite, shreekhand was not too sweet. The service was especially good and food was served with love and affection. Our waiter forced us to eat more and was very helpful and kind. Thinking that possibly we had eaten more than we should, we asked whether some methi grains were available. And they were. Highly recommended even though marginally more expensive.

This an over-rated & overpriced restaurant for the pedestrian and pathetic food they serve. While the ambience and staff are courteous there is much to be desired about the taste and quality of food. Every dish is sweetened, tasteless and our experience was miserable. Avoidable....

Restaurant situated on ground floor close to Churchgate/ Eros cinema. Has outdoor seating and inner AC seating. The starters we had chaat ( quite a variety) which was good. Then came the veg main course with roti, kulcha and garlic naan. Was nice but quite spicy for my taste. Stick to regular spicy unless you like it hot. Ample space and staff quite attentive. Parking will be issue due to the metro works ongoing. Worth visiting if your in the neighbourhood.

Great food, paneer tikka was delicious and a perfect accompaniment to the veg jalfrezi. We also had rice and nan which was way too much food for us as the portions are very generous. If we were here longer we would definitely return

We would give them 9/10 The reasons: It was the best nan bread we had tried in India so far. Other dishes were tasty and big size. The cost-quality ratio was really nice. On the other hand we had to say that as a drawback they dont let share the thali between people. For example, when we tried to take it with another dish with 2 extra nans, they forced us to take another dish , even if it was too much quantity. The expresso coffee is terrible. The place is nice as well as the staff

Visited Samrat for old times sake. It's in the middle of a huge amount of construction for the metro but the place was quite full for a weekday lunch. Chola Bhatura and Buttermilk. Standard order from 40 years ago! The chola was a tad too spicy for my liking and the Bhatura was pure maida. Prices have risen but not alarmingly. This is still a good value for money family restaurant. Perfect for impoverished management trainees!

A place wherein you can have a hearty homely meal without waiting for your hunger pangs to overtake your patience. Dal dhokli with shudh ghee by the side is my personal favourite. In case you are a gourmet seeker do try their voracious thali. Seasonal pure aamras puri is another popular dish. Visit to Mumbai is incomplete without lunch at Samrat.

I remember going to Samrat as a young man with black hair about 40 years ago and liking it. I’ve been visiting the restaurant during my trips to Bombay, and I went back with my wife last week. It was an enjoyable experience, which’s why I’m writing throughout these years again it has been good food, good service, every aspect authentic, and no aspect off-putting in any way. Attentive staff, good food, friendly atmosphere, reasonable pricing … the sweet spot of success.
