Nimtho, I thought, was about Sikkimese food. At least that's what thought until I landed up there. It turned out that they serve Himalayan (Sikkimese, Nepali) and other Asian dishes too. This review is based on two visits, and having tried dishes recommended by bloggers...on various platforms.
The place is clean, and has a well-worn feel, with basic but comfortable seating. They have indoor and terrace seating, but the terrace seating can get dusty, so I'd avoid it if you're fussy about the 'atmosphere' not getting into your food!
The staff is courteous, efficient, and knows the food, so feel free to ask what the dish has in it and what it goes well with.
On my first visit, I tried their signature "buckwheat momos" which were quite delicious, and the clear soup that came with them helped wash them down quite nicely.
I also had their Nepali Pork Tareko, which was tasty, but a little extra salty for my liking. It was good to try once, not sure I'll have it again.
On my most recent visit, I tried their Crispy Fried Nepali Chicken, the Thenthuk soup, and the Sikkimese Thali, all of which turned out to be great.
The chicken was succulent and beautifully spiced, but the best part is the accompanying red chilly sauce, which I discovered was red from the chilies, not tomatoes!
The Thenthuk soup is a great alternate to Thukpa, and is becoming my favourite soup meal in winter.
The Sikkimese pork thali had servings of rice, some sort of curry, potatoes, and boiled ferns, accompanied with some crispy fried veggies, salad, and papad. I didn't much care for the potatoes or the curry, but the pork and the ferns were delicious, as were the salads and rice.
The overall experience is pleasant, the staff doesn't rush you, and you can spend time and seriously enjoy the food here. I didn't try too many dishes, but since I was aiming for Sikkimese cuisine, the max I would experiment here would be with neighbouring Nepali food. And my guess is, that the Sikkim and Nepal dishes would be the best dishes on their menu.More
