Al's has been serving lunch forever, but the steak sandwich I was served recently was similar to what I have enjoyed a year or two ago. Al's is great on consistent food, but the quality is just OK and unchanged.

I went to visit a dear friend. He'd been raving all week about Al's so I agreed to the hour drive for a cheese steak. There was a half hour line. Oh my goodness - no wonder the line. I've been completely spoilt! The friendly guys at Al's saw me & handed off several more heavenly lunches before I left... More

After reading the reviews on Yelp and also on Eater, where it was selected as one of the top ten places to go for a philly cheesesteak, I was pumped. The amount of meat they put in the sub is great and the price is reasonable. However, the meat was a bit cold and dry for my liking. I will... More

Al's has one of the best Philly Cheesesteaks in the metro area, If you're looking for a great sandwich and not ambiance, this is the place to go. I have tried cheesesteaks in Philly and Al's is better than Gino's. The jar of hot peppers is a delightful addition. I'm thinking about taking a ride to Alexandria right now after... More

I wanted to like it -- I really did. It's a local business producing a generous-sized sandwich. But it was greasy and unremarkable, and the onion rings were nothing to write home about. There are other local options which IMO are better.

This place is fantastic & John has always prided himself in serving the best & he does...doesn't matter if it is subs or pizza, he does it right for over 50+ years. This little out of the way place, only a mile or so from Old Town serves the finest Philly Steak & Cheese anywhere & you will never leave... More

This is by far the closest that anyone can get to a true philly cheesesteak in our area, hands down!!

This is my favorite place for steak and cheese sub. REAL meat and lots of it. A small will fill you way up. So delicious. A large is basically 2 small subs. So, a large can be shared by 2 people. I think it is around $16.00 for the large. $8 for the small. BUT, like I said it is... More

We may not be in Philadelphia but this sandwich is as close as it gets to those iconic subs. The Steak and cheese is great. Not only is it really large but the quality is excellent as well. We have been going here for years and the sandwiches are consistently good.

When I told a friend we'd moved to Del Ray, their first question was whether we'd been to Al's. Rightly so. The cheesesteaks are great--but be prepared to wait for your order. Few tables, so take-out is best--and it does take time to craft these sandwiches.
