Nonyas (or the Peranakan) were the women who were born to Straits ( some Malayan states) Chinese who took Malay wives back in the 19th Century. As they became prosperous, developed English speaking skills, educated their children in English ways, they produce a cuisine that...is an amalgam of Chinese, Malay and English food, all the time maintaining their way of life as a hybrid in Malaysian society. Their dress was a mixture of Malay baju and Chinese and remains to this day highly revered in Malaysia. Now the problem is very few restaurants still do these authentic dishes. So when you find one you tend to keep it to yourself. But this place is such a hoot you have to make the trek about 20 mins outside KL centre. A couple of cousins from Melaka (one of the homes of Nonya culture) set this restaurant up as a trip back in time. The walls are covered with film pix of bygone stars from the 1930's to 1970's and many antique items all reflecting that Nonya era. The crazy proprietor gets up between service and sings anything from Shanghai 1930's melodies to those great kitsch songs from 1950's and 1960's pop USA. The food is really authentic. Mum's taufu dish, chicken wings in coffee!! (lovely), butterfish in butter sauce, stinky beans with fresh prawns and sambal, fern frond veggies, etc, etc. If you are at all interested in seeing authentic Malaysian culture and food this is the place. Call the owner Desmond and you will find he will tell you what is fresh from the market that day. The trip is a bit of a hike and you need a taxi driver who know the location, but well worth it. Getting back is easy. Desmond will arrange a taxi.More
