Kappo dining, fusing kaiseki sensibilities with western touches (eg. Wine pairings available, in addition to sake and beer) in a lively setting set withing a beautiful house near Yasaka Shrine. A contrast with the much more serious traditional kaiseki roots (and typically somewhat serious setting) which the chef nevertheless does draw upon.

My husband and I dined at Yonemura during our visit to Kyoto. We chose the restaurant based on TripAdvisor reviews and the Michelin guide. We were warmly greeted by the staff upon arrival and sat on the counter overlooking the kitchen. It was a lot of fun watching the kitchen staff prepare the food and the amount of attention and... This one of the new fusion-type restaurants that are breaking the mold of traditional Japanese cooking, which even when brilliantly prepared, as much of it is, can seem a bit repetitive. Yonemura's version is a wonderful amalgam of French and Japanese. Think "Flatfish Meuniere, foie gras & chestnut with cold pumpkin sauce" and "Bouillabaisse of the clam," to quote from... More

This restaurant is recommended to tourist who are in town. The restaurant has nice ambience, food is tasty and artistically decorated. Prices are not cheap but still affordable....

I booked this restaurant through the hotel not really knowing what to expect but thinking it would be pretty good from articles I had read. The taxi took us to a small doorway down a quiet lane that opened into a tiny but beautiful Japanese garden and that was the start of our experience. We were seated at a bar... More

I loved this place. An inviting space, great staff and a menu that challenges and delights with its hints of French techniques and flavours with a solid Japanese base. Other reviewers have said that didn't like the cold pasta with hairy crab and sea urchin but for me it was the highlight. Probably not a place for those seeking standard... More

We booked this restaurant for our first night in Kyoto- when we booked we informed them that one person was vegetarian and they said it was fine. We then showed up sat down after a long day of travelling and there was not one item on the menu that was vegetarian friendly, we asked about the vegetarian menu that we... More

This is a full course restaurant that will take your tastebuds on a gastronomic adventure with around a dozen (maybe slightly less) courses. We had lunch at the private room at the back of the restaurant, which was perfect for peace and quiet - but don't miss the counter experience if its your first time. Don't forget to buy their... Some courses ( beef and foie gras, fish and gazpacho) were very good and some (cold pasta with squid and sea urchin , and salmon roe with cold tea) were so bad as to be inedible. Fusion cooking can be hit and miss; sea urchin is a must in high-end Japanese cooking and not something we care for. If you... More

Had dinner there last night , we were really looking forward to it , as we had booked it 2 months in advance , having seen it on the Destination Flavour food tv program. We were expecting - bold , innovative , outstanding cuisine . It sadly wasn't any of that. When I think of bold and innovative - I... More
