Be smart when getting to this place, we were lucky enough that it was raining, and we popped right after the rain, generally the queue here is bad, very bad, but thats coz the sushi is good, amazingly good (fresh) I think there is something beyond fresh, coz, I have tasted fresh sushi elsewhere, but this is generally much better... If you want to have a quick sushi service, this is a good place to choose. The sushi is good, with large selection to cater tastes. I noticed no local customers, which makes me believe this place caters mostly to locals. So you wont find a authentic Japanese experience here.

Went back for my second visit on New Year. The sushi was just as I remembered, fresh and delicious. Do try their seasonal snow crab sushi if you have the chance! We were given a warm welcome on our way to our seats and service was fast and prompt once we were seated.

Apparently their rice includes gluten (sushi viniger), so I couldn't eat sushi. My wife did and said it was the best sushi she had ever had. The gluten free options are mainly Sashimi. There are many option (with gluten) on the belt, easy to chose from with clear prices. I didn't like the Sashimi options from the menu, so I... More

Small and cosy! This sushi restaurant only caters to about 26 customers at any one time. Good thing is you can make reservations, which I definitely plan to do next time... got there for a late lunch around 2.30 and still had to wait! And it was well worth it! The sushi was fresh and sweet, with the perfect proportion... More

I didn't have much of an issue with anything here - overall good, nothing really special though. I think the conveyor belt novelty is more of the draw to this place. Decent prices, I'd go back.

We visited this establishment in November for sushi one evening. We were warmly welcomed and sat at the bar. Ordering is done via a tablet and one can see the chef preparing the sushi. The food was tasty and fresh; however, it was not top of the range sushi. Nevertheless, the price was right, the beer was cold and the... More

Service was prompt and very good. The sushi was astonishingly bad. I have had the same quality in a grocery store in the US.

Staying in Pontocho

Neighbourhood Profile
Pontocho
Though small by comparison, Pontocho is one of Kyoto's most spirited and memorable neighborhoods. A narrow street straddling the Kamogawa River, it is Kyoto's busiest nightlife spot. When darkness falls, Pontocho's many signs and lanterns bolt to life, making the area glow with invitations to passers-by to come inside and pull up a chair. Its restaurants and bars sprawl onto the riverbank, providing a friendly atmosphere and delicious food. Verandas are always filled with people young and old crowding tables, biting into hot yakitori or sipping cold beers. It is a culinary heart of Kyoto as much as one of its most laid-back, clamorous, and entertaining evening hotspots. Pontocho has more of an amiable vibrancy to it than an elegant one, attracting newcomers, local veterans, and everyone in between, in casual attire like sneakers and jeans.
