Italian fusion with view on the river. Good food and nice view. Staff is (as always in Japan friendly and humble). Not cheap but price-quality is okay. There is a terrace when the weather is good.

I think we were there by chance about 7 years ago for New Year day and we remember that it was great. My husband passed this time, again in new year, in front of Kichiu and he insisted to go there next day after we had very disappointing Kaiseki dinner at Suetomo, two star michelin guide. And Kichiu did not... More

Pouring rain drove us into this restaurant for shelter. Initially we were not going to stay as it was "Italian" food, which we love but did not want while in Japan. However, we looked at the menu and decided to stay. This is NOT your mama's Italian food, this is amazing fusion style honoring both countries strong points. Dinner was... More

My Girlfriend and I ate there yesterday. We had a good experience but ended up paying 100$ for the both of us. The appetizer portions are a bit too small, but again really good. The primi piatti (pastas etc.) Were actually really fairly priced and also delicious. Service was incredibly friendly and competent, spoke perfect english and even gave us... More

We had a fantastic Italian 3 course dinner at this restaurant. Great atmosphere and overlooking the canal. The catch of the day was one of the best fish dishes I have ever had accompanied by great seafood. Staff gave first class service. I can't recognize other reviews in this forum mentioning small portions. This restaurant is highly recommendable.

This place was excellent! Travelling as a Westerner (Aussie), we struggled to get into some of the traditional Japanese restaurants in Kyoto (they seem to have a strict pre-booking policy). As a result we stumbled across this Japanese-Italian fusion restaurant near our hotel. Very glad we did! Scorpione takes the best elements of Kyoto cooking (seasonal ingredients, respecting the underlying... More

My wife and I stopped in for a glass of wine and dessert. Scorpione is one of the few places in the Pontocho area that has seating looking over the river. We ordered the chocolate torte and added gelato. The torte was served a little too cold but had a nice enough to taste.

Nice mix between italian and jaoanese cuisine, well presented and very tasty. A little bite overpriced, but not insane for the location. Wewent there for lunch.

Well done , conceptually elegant in terms of food presentation and taste , the waiters and chefs seem well dedicated , smiling always and ever so welcoming with their warm hospitality, efforts behind every dish is showcased brilliantly , though I'll understand where the mixed review is coming from , it's not for everyone , it's a place where only... We went for dinner after a long day in Kyoto, intention was to get a good european meal on an elevated level. The service was friendly and helpful. No other guests were present at that moment. The waiter didn't ask for the meat's grade of doneness and forgot to bring ordered water. The first dish (white asparagus) as an expensive... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
