Serving home made soba noodles made with made-in-Japan ingredients since 1929. Dashi, or the soup, is "elegantly sweeter" (Kyoto or Kansai style) compared to those in the Tokyo area. Good location and refined (not the efficient fast-food type) service. Apparently a popular place among the maiko and geiko dancers.

This is the second time we have eaten here and have really enjoyed the food both times. The set meals are lovely - great soba and udon noodles. If you don't react well to MSG don't add the 'salt'!

We stumbeld in there by accident because we were very hungry and tought it looked fine. Right next to the entrance you can watch people make soba in the daytime. It's difficult to find a good and reasonable restaurant in this very busy part of Kyoto. Ukiya provides very nice Soba dishes, they are homemade and you can even bring back some boxes home. For soba lovers, you have to try their signature Uki-ten. It's basically soba (choice of warm/cold but I recommend the latter as it's really refreshing) topped with a myriad of toppings such as tempura flakes, natto, chopped spring onions, and a delicious foamy egg mixture floating atop. Good chicken and leek soba. Happy staff if somewhat lacking in English. The building is old and plain. As the restaurant specialises in soba there wasn't anything else on the menu - double check with your dining companions if they are ok with this!

The soba had certain texture. Source had the right light sweetness. The small dishes including the tofu and octopus fish cake were nice too. Chicken skew was average. Overall, if around, it's good to try.

We enjoyed this restaurant, located in e B2 level of the very niceHotel Okura. Don't expect a view! The soba was excellent, good tempura, a very nice set of various things. Pontocho
Though small by comparison, Pontocho is one of Kyoto's most spirited and memorable neighborhoods. A narrow street straddling the Kamogawa River, it is Kyoto's busiest nightlife spot. When darkness falls, Pontocho's many signs and lanterns bolt to life, making the area glow with invitations to passers-by to come inside and pull up a chair. Its restaurants and bars sprawl onto the riverbank, providing a friendly atmosphere and delicious food. Verandas are always filled with people young and old crowding tables, biting into hot yakitori or sipping cold beers. It is a culinary heart of Kyoto as much as one of its most laid-back, clamorous, and entertaining evening hotspots. Pontocho has more of an amiable vibrancy to it than an elegant one, attracting newcomers, local veterans, and everyone in between, in casual attire like sneakers and jeans.
