This place is wonderful. It has a great feel of traditional Japan, wonderful menu, and amazing hosts. Can't speak highly enough of Shinshin. Food was brilliant with a large variety of choice.

Let me recommend to foreigners too. Here is absolutely best place where you must go when you visit Kyoto. You can know not only the history of samurai but feel the great heart of Japanese. You'll love it. I promise you.

Great traditional restaurant, which is about the samurai history. They speak great English and explain a lot about the tradition. The food is also great, would always go again!

I took my school trip of 29 staff and students here for dinner one night. I had booked it from Australia in advance. The building is just so old and beautiful. You sit at small tables on the floor. The food was amazing. We ordered a set menu and it was delicious. The staff are all very welcoming and hospitable... More

I loved the decoration and ambiance of the restaurant. The staff was amazing and extremely helpful! Their English was excellent. We even got recommendations of places to visit and eat in the city. The food was also delicious. My boyfriend ordered the course with the beef (amazing) and I had the samurai menu, which I enjoyed a lot! Highlights were... More

To be fair, I must state that my BF and I were probably partially disappointed with our experience at Samurai restaurant because the night before we had an amazing and truly authentic refined experience at Ume no Hana Restaurant which was in the same area. After having had the amazing experience at Ume no Hana restaurant, the Samurai restaurant felt... More

We treated ourselves to the steak set menu - very expensive at 10000Y, but the food was delicious from starters to dessert. The beef just melted in your mouth. Our teen son had the Samurai burger, which was a little greasy but he still really enjoyed it, while our daughter had the chicken with tartare. Unfortunately, the chicken had quite... More

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
