We decided on a change and went for Italian. We both had tomato based pastas - arrabiatta which was very spicy and mine was just a basic tomato and mozzarella, there wasn't much mozzarella but the tomato sauce tasted very fresh, it was really good. Service was friendly.

This is a small plates/tapas-style restaurant overlooking the water in an old townhouse. They have an English menu and staff that spoke English. Ordered the 5-course set dinner menu for 4800¥ which was a good value. Definitely left full. It's kaiseki-style where chef chooses and is served on a lacquer tray. Courses include a raw course, fried course, grilled course,... More

Food was very good, though portions were small. Service was excellent and the view of the river was very nice. Restaurant is nicely appointed, clean and comfortable. The yellow tail shasumi was very nice.

As tourists, we missed seeing any geisha on this historic alley. Many restaurants here. Ducked into this restaurant for dinner for six. Offered a traditional very low height table on second floor and indoors, as the more desirable deck overlooking the river was not available. This was uncomfortable for the older (60+) less limber among us. Food was good, especially... More

Food was bad too oily even simple edemame comes soaked in oil. Portions are very small, you will have to order multiple plates and it is also expensive for the value. Service was very slow, took almost 45 min to get 2 small plates. Big disappointment

Difficult to choose in Pontocho for a visitor. Randomly went in and not disappointed. Ate inside because the terrace was full. Very nice view of the river. Ate sashimi then tempura and teriyaki chicken. All excellent. Service friendly, English menus, all good! For the adventurous visitor one half is seated on the floor on tatami mats. The other half is... More

My husband and I stumbled upon this restaurant while visiting Kyoto and loved it. We ordered from the regular menu and enjoyed our entrees very much. The service was impeccable and our table facing the river was very romantic. We also shared a tasty and fresh salad and enjoyed assorted desserts. We had a lovely evening. The dinner was a... More

We stumbled upon the Japanese one ( I understood there are 2). Managed to get a table in 10 min and the food was awesome! The set menu with 9 courses was a very good value for us. 12.000 with 9 courses on that location, including 4 drinks and the cover charge. The casual area next to the bar, even... More

If you would like some good Italian food for a change of pace while in Kyoto, you won't go wrong here. I had the salad Caprese which was absolutely delicious and my husband enjoyed a Caesar salad. We both had pasta and it could not have been better had we been in New York. I have been told that the... More

We returned two plates and partially ate two more. The food came at irregular intervals. The kitchen was unsanitary (I work in foodservice.) They where clearly overwhelmed. Worst restaurand I've ever been in, worldwide. I no longer trust Tripadvisor.

Staying in Pontocho

Neighbourhood Profile
Pontocho
Though small by comparison, Pontocho is one of Kyoto's most spirited and memorable neighborhoods. A narrow street straddling the Kamogawa River, it is Kyoto's busiest nightlife spot. When darkness falls, Pontocho's many signs and lanterns bolt to life, making the area glow with invitations to passers-by to come inside and pull up a chair. Its restaurants and bars sprawl onto the riverbank, providing a friendly atmosphere and delicious food. Verandas are always filled with people young and old crowding tables, biting into hot yakitori or sipping cold beers. It is a culinary heart of Kyoto as much as one of its most laid-back, clamorous, and entertaining evening hotspots. Pontocho has more of an amiable vibrancy to it than an elegant one, attracting newcomers, local veterans, and everyone in between, in casual attire like sneakers and jeans.
