I am very sad to be giving this restaurant a bad review because the staff were really friendly and helpful. However, I was very disappointed by the quality of the food. I was not amazed by any dishes, the quality was average to poor. For a meal at this price I was expecting to be wowed and to enjoy truly... More

Knowing the crowd in Gion is just like a flowing rive during cherry blossom season, we made a reservation through a oversea phone call in advance. The dining atmosphere is tranquil since every table is private, keeping a safe distance from the other tables. The service is excellent, every waitress here can converse with u in fluent English. The cuisine... More

Came for lunch. No booking but got last table. Sat at open kitchen so able to see chefs preparing meal. Set lunch. Each course the chefs come and give a brief description. Almost 2 hr lunch and enjoyed everything. Must come if you are in Kyoto.

We booked after reading good reviews however, our experience left us dumbfounded! What were we missing?from the start we weren't greeted by any staff member and waited in a shabby entrance hall where we were seated to a dated conference room dining table upstairs. There was no atmosphere or ambience. It felt like an 80s conference room. They presented us... More

The food at this restaurant is absolutely terrible !!!!! Extremely over the top expensive and very poor quality food. I have travelled the world extensively and this is the worst restaurant as well as the most expensive that I have ever experienced. Warning: Do not eat here - unless you want to pay $450.00 for a disgusting meal for two... More

Went here having checked out some reviews and seen that it was near to where we were staying. Had the lunch menu and it was really good. The restaurant itself is very nice and you can sit round the kitchen seeing the meals being prepared. The staff were polite and did their best to explain each dish. The timing of... More

I came with a friend to sample some Kaiseki cuisine in Kyoto, and we were both impressed. It should go without saying that everything was delicious, but we were continuously impressed with the calibre of the artistic presentation with which the dishes were presented. And, the restaurant layout being as it was, it was fantastic to watch the chefs at... More

Karyo is delicious. The food is creative and dynamic. If you read any reviews complaining about the atmosphere - don't pay attention. The ambience is nice but the focus is just on the food - evident by the open kitchen. Be prepared to experience 30 separate dishes, each with completely different flavors in a single night. Highly recommended. Anyone who... More

Like some others, I came here expecting a wonderful Kaiseki experience, based on the recommendation of my hotel. And like some others, I didn't even finish the (expensive) meal. The service was supposed to be impeccable, but from the start it was made clear that I was unwelcome. The dishes were tossed in front of me. They were shoving food... More

Staying in Gion

Neighbourhood Profile
Gion
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
