We enjoyed a fabulous dinner here one night. We were given a traditional Japanese dining experience (sitting on the floor), and were treated to delicious food that we chose and from recommendations from our waiter, who spoke very good English. He also recommended a Sake that was not on the menu, and it was spot on! Sake, I find, is... More

We are used to eating in Japan from 10$ to 400$ , from north to south , and it is the worst experience we had so far. As soon as we ordered, the dishes began to be served in a very quick succession, so we had the feeling to get stuffed: a 50$ menu served in an hour! we did... More

Our guide book recommended this place and it was close to our hotel. It's on a residential street and looks like a traditional house so get good directions. The dining room is traditional style although with seating more friendly to westerners. There is also a small enclosed garden and lots of small rooms. I think you can also sit at... More

It may have been an off night.....but the service was poor. For our party of three, entrees arrived at different times. The salad and pickles were served after the entrees. Some items were served lukewarm Chicken brochette and chicken livers were excellent. If you frequent this restaurant be sure you tell the waitress in what order you would like your... More

Went with my wife and 14 year old daughters. We tried a while bunch of different skewers and every one was great. The chicken with plum sauce was UNBELIEVABLE. Kids also had crispy chicken skins and pronounced them a hit too. We tried to go back a couple days later but they were full. Reservations on the weekend are a... More

Our favourite, and the best yakitori restaurant in Kyoto (Hitomi = 〒606-8376 Kyoto Prefecture, Kyoto, 左京区大菊町96) was closed for Obon so we had to look elsewhere. And found ourselves at Kushikura. It has a very attractive exterior, reminiscent of an ancient ryokan, and with lots of wood inside and low beams and creaking wooden floors the scene is set perfectly.... More

Recommended by our hotel, we gave this place a try. A nice small establishment, with a combination of counter, tables and seating. Wonderfully presented and attended to, our me was a nice experience. Definitely off the beaten track, this place had many locals dining who were obvious regulars.

A yakitori specialist, this place is a must-visit. Warm welcome in a traditional place, with tatami, or even seats facing the grill and chefs. Every part of the chicken can be sampled. Select your preference or get a fixed menu. Some good sakes too.

We tried this yakatori restaurant based off of the reviews given on this site. The menu shown here is dated. We paid 2200Y for the 5 skewer dinner. The food was good enough but didn't have much of a wow factor. The atmosphere was nice where we were seated in front of the grill, although you could feel the heat... More

Excellent yakatori; excellent service in an attractive setting. We each had the 5-course menu plus a few side dishes. We would definitely recommend.

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
