Make sure to eat earlier than the normal lunch or dinner time to avoid the queue. It the wait time is worth it. I've had like three extra servings of the cabbage and rice. And their green tea ice cream dessert is amazing! Will definitely come back!

Located right upstairs from Kyoto Station, Katsukura was convenient. The katsu was fresh and crispy. Getting up to the restaurant in the rain was bit of a hassle even with umbrellas as the escalators are exposed to the elements.

Katsukura seems to be a chain and friends, who had tried this restaurant in a different city, were very happy about it. We totally agree to what they adviced us. We found Katsukura on the 11th floor of the Kyoto Station Building, close to Isetan. It seems to cater mainly for locals, but inside we got a menu in English... More

Visited this place after having read lots of reviews on TripAdvisor. It is true! It is that good! We've been there on a Tuesday evening around 8:30 and the service was very good, no complaints. I'm not a huge pork fan but this one was the best one I've ever had. Is is so tender and crispy, and goes very... More

Absolutely one of the culinary highlights of my life. I had the pork cutlet (for around ¥1.300) and it was amazing. Melts away in your mouth. My girlfriend had the slightly more expensive ¥2.000 choice which was even better. You can in fact taste a real difference but I must say I was already more than pleased with my dish.... More

Love the tonkatsu, it is soooo tender and the taste is so delicious. The side dishes are refillable - coleslaw, rice, soup.

To get to this restaurant in Kyoto station, you need to go up to level 11 from Isetan, then walk for another 5-10 minutes before reaching it (it is at the end of the round loop). Do not confuse this with another tonkatsu place which is also at the same level (forgot the name). I would recommend the tenderloin tonkatsu.... More

Food is ok, I had better one in Nara with much much better service and smiles. Location is hard to find if you are first time in the train building.

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
