Last year my wife and I discovered this restaurant that states to hail from Kyoto. Kyoto is for us the most friendly vibed city in Japan and the manager gives you a warm welcome. The fact that he cannot show a dutch menu is easily forgotten when you sink your teeth in their awesome food. The sauces are mighty fine... More

When we arrived there was a line of about 15 people so I anticipated a long wait. However this place is efficiently run and we were seated within 15 minutes. As we were standing the host handed us a menu and he can back to take our order. Thus, we were served within minutes of being seated. Fast, efficient, and... More

Probably my third visit at this outlet over the years. (They have one in Tokyo at Takashimaya Time Square.) I thought the portion is slightly smaller now but tasty no less and I do think the staff are kind of stressed by demanding tourists so the service standards have dropped slightly. They are still polite but I detect a sense... More

We came here for lunch after reading so many positive reviews about it. It was bit hard to find but we found it at last. After getting out of the platform, you need to take the escalator to the upper floor and you will see massive stairs with escalators then you take those escalators up to the top floor. Take... More

We wanted to try everything Japanese while we were traveling around Japan. We stumbled upon this place which was hidden at the Kyoto Station. Tip find the department store and just go the the 11th floor. Once you get off the escalator make a left and keep to the right. The place will appear on the left side. We had... More

We almost gave up trying to find this place but so glad we persisted. The katsu here is amazing - crispy on the outside and the meat tender on the inside. You can have free refills of barley rice, cabbage salad and miso soup. Upon ordering, you get a bowl of sesame seeds which you grind - the fragrance of... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
