So this place is associated with a sake brewery, you'd definitely want to get a drink here with your meal. The food itself is really wonderful; we went out on a limb and tried some chicken parts and were surprised by how much we enjoyed innards we didn't really recognize. The menu is extensive and the food very good, you... More

Torisei Honten is maybe one of the most famous restaurants in Fushimi district, Kyoto. This restaurant is managed by a Sake brewery, Shisei. Outside of this restaurant, there is a spring called "Shiragikusui", and in this restaurant you can drink this water. Their Yakitori (grilled chicken) is not bad at all.

I emailed Yamamoto Honke sake brewery about scheduling a tour, but unfortunately we were visiting off season, but they still recommended to check out their restaurant. We showed up on a week night and the restaurant was buzzing. There were probably around 15 people waiting for a table before us, but the wait went by very fast. I think we... More

While visiting the sake district in Fushimi, we dined at Torisei for lunch, one of Fushimi's most popular yakitori restaurants. The service was fast and friendly, and the food was great. Whether you have the yakitori, tempura, and/or sushi, you will be happy. The sake is great too as Fushimi has the best spring water! The service and food quality... More

Good yakitori place after a nice visit to the sake museum. Get the cartilage and try multiple sake glasses! Lotus root stuffed with minced chicken is good!

Just had dinner here with my boyfriend as it was close to our airbnb apartment. The restaurant was full with Japanese locals which is always a good sign. We got an English menu, but didn't understand the Japanese form you should use to order. We just wrote the numbers down on the back which worked out as well by talking... More

This is the place that made me realised that chicken (certain ones I'm sure) could be eaten raw. Their chicken sashimi is delicious! If you're not comfortable with eating uncooked chicken, then you can try their many variety of yakitori. A must-eat is the cheese mochi ice cream with chocolate centre. It is absolutely gorgeous! Another item to try is... More

The queue at a place in the backstreets gives a clue. Inside is a beautiful old style restaurant with a great atmosphere. Great service, great food and drink at very reasonable prices. To be picky, the chicken croquettes were mainly potato and it took several tries to find a sake to our taste but overall hard to beat.

One of our favourite restaurants in Japan so far, a little out of the centre (in the south of the city), although close to subway stations and a couple of stops from the popular Inari shrine. This place either was or still is a Sake brewery, not too sure as the person I asked did not understand English too well... More

This is right next to (and owned by) Yamamoto Honke, a sake brewery in Fushimi. An English menu is available. It's the only place that I've knowingly eaten raw chicken, and it was good. Chicken hearts are very chewy.

Staying in Southern Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Southern Kyoto
Southern Kyoto has a reserved air. Though the Fushimi Inari Shrine is one of Kyoto's major tourist attractions, the surrounding nature, parks, gardens, temples, and shrines provide less-visited spaces for strolling and reflection. The Fushimi Inari Shrine itself is made up of 32,000 sub-shrines, and the mountain they are dotted across beckons hikers, picnickers, and lovers of the outdoors. Many of the mountain's off-set paths aren't frequented by tourists, and the mountain's serenity can be enjoyed at a leisurely pace. Southern Kyoto is the place to enjoy being outside, and to pay your respects to the ancient architecture and gods of the land that are celebrated here.
