We sat on the patio at about 3p and had snacks and drinks while overlooking the river. It is hard to find a place in Japan with the "café culture" -- somewhere you can sit and watch the world go by without feeling rushed --...More

This is an incredible looking restaurant reached by the oldest elevator in Japan. The view over the river is wonderful. The service is courteous but not solicitous. The food is okay but nothing that you could not find done better elsewhere. But as a place...More

The Tohkasaikan sits atop a 30s-stye building on the banks of the Kamogawa river. You reach it by a ride on Japan's oldest elevator, with a operator who asks for your floor (you want the fifth, gokai) before turning the crank. Once there we four...More

The main attraction was the kawadoko, a wooden platform extendiung out over the river. After dark, there are cooling breezes off the river and a clear view of Minami-za on the other bank. My only complaint was the lack of light. Normally, I would consider...More

Perfect view and location right on the river. Supprisingly reasonable price. Food wasn't bad, nothing 5* but ok. Service was very good.

Nothing fancy, but good location. We wanted gyoza and fried rice with some drinks. For such a simple meal, it was perfect Would not recommend for anyone looking for a fancy dinner or cheap eats, but Tokasaikan fit our needs.

My wife and I just wanted a few drinks on the patio, unlike other restaurants in the neighborhood that seemed to enforce a prx fix menu or fee, this one was attentive without a "deck fee." The staff were so helpful we ordered ala carte....More

Building looks nice on the outside but needs urgent repairs inside, peeling paint, grimy wall coverings, but I would be able to live with this if the quality of food had been decent. We paid 6000 yen per person plus 10% table charge for a...More

This historic restaurant serves traditional Beijing-style cuisine. Once you step into this classic building, you can enjoy the oldest elevator in Japan. Staffs are very attentive and friendly. Of course, you can enjoy sharks fin or roasted duck, not so expensive in this restaurant, although,...More

Pontocho
Though small by comparison, Pontocho is one of Kyoto's
most spirited and memorable neighborhoods. A narrow
street straddling the Kamogawa River, it is Kyoto's
busiest nightlife spot. When darkness falls,
Pontocho's many signs and lanterns bolt to life,
making the area glow with invitations to passers-by to
come inside and pull up a chair. Its restaurants and
bars sprawl onto the riverbank, providing a friendly
