This review comes late as my girlfriend and I visited Arashiyama in December of 2015. Reservation was made by email and responses were prompt and courteous. Lunch was composed of delicate traditional Japanese dishes and the view of the river added to the experience. After lunch, we were able to enjoy a private bath at Arashiyama. Overall, it was a... Let me begin by saying that I couldn't possibly imagine proposing to my fiancee any other way: a warm welcome, a dip in an authentic, fragrant hinoki routenburo in view of Arashiyama's mountains as the sun set, a riverside view of the mountains and the boats plying the Oi from a private, traditional Ryokan room, a kaiseki dinner that was... We could not afford to stay a night in any of the top class Ryokan, so instead we booked lunch and a private bath here. It was a fabulous experience! We had the most incredible meal and felt so relaxed after soaking in the water. I would highly recommend this to everyone!

This was my second time to visit Arashiyama Benkei! Kyoto is always my top list in my travel plan and the scenic spot of Arashiyama is best of the best. The location of Arashiyama Benkei is very close to the major Arashiyama hotspots but a little bit away from the noisy travellers' crowd. Tatami room is well-equipped and comfy. Food... More

I had planned this trip to Arashiyama Benkei as a surprise to my fiancé. The Arashiyama Benkei team were great all along the way, from reservations to the actual visit. The team had helped me to reserve a dip in their outdoor onsen before our lunch and were prompt and patient with answering any queries I had before my visit.... More

Apprecaite the reply from Bankei to my dissatisfaction. The room we had was not a river view but a garden view that we couldn't open the shaded windows as people from other rooms/buildings can see us! I stayed 3 different onsen ryokans this time in my trip, Mikasa Nara and Tocen Goshoboh Airma. Both are HKD2500 to HKD1000 cheaper than... More

On the edge of Kyoto, across from a beautiful fishing stream, near Tenryu-Ji Temple. Foods served by Geisha-costumed servers, in exquisite Bento boxes. Very top-rated dining near Sogenchi Garden.

Good Japanese food, carefully arranged and with a very nice view of the river. We had the tofu lunch. For those who are not Japanese, like us, it was a great experience. Highly recommended.

Welcome Arashiyama Benkei was established in 1969 on the historical and scenic land known as Arashiyama. . Guests at Benkei indulge in traditional multi-course kaiseki fare that uses seasonal ingredients found not only in Kyoto, but sourced from all over Japan. We take care in creating cuisine that appeals to all palates, yet maintains respect for the tenets of traditional Kyoto cooking. -The Soul of Kyoto Cuisine- Having prospered as Japan's capital city for over a millennium, Kyoto also developed its own gourmet culture as a prominent national culinary center. Most consider the origins of Kyoto cooking to be found in shōjin-ryōri, Buddhist vegetarian cuisine. This translates into a modern culinary tradition that is characterized by an emphasis on the flavors of the ingredients and what can be added to enhance those flavors. In addition to flavor, this custom values food presentation and dining atmosphere, inviting all 5 senses to indulge in the experience. The end result is an appreciation for nature's bounty, and an unparalleled sense of hospitality (omotenashi) toward the diner. -Enjoy a day trip of Kyoto cuisine and Arashiyama onsen- Day trip guests at Benkei may also opt to enjoy a relaxing bath in addition to a gourmet meal. The facilities open at 11:30 a.m. We offer full plans that include meals in private room (2 hours for bento meals or 3 hours for full-course kaiseki meals), baths, towels, and yukata robe, as well as more informal plans that include a restaurant meal in the open space and onsen bath.

Staying in Western Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Western Kyoto
Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best eccentricities. Kyoto's Saga-Toriimoto Preserved Street takes visitors back in time to the Meiji Period, where old homes have been transformed into tea houses and eateries. Pleasure boats drift down the riverbank, under wooden bridges that beckon nature lovers to hiking trails and botanical walks. The area's famously tall bamboo groves, monkey park, and impressive vistas during the Hanami cherry blossom viewing season mean that it is busiest in warmer months, though also gorgeous in the fall, when the mountains and hills along the banks turn multi-colored. Historic and engaging, even the rail cars in Western Kyoto seek to exemplify its traditional nature and scenic beauty. Many people, including natives, come to visit the 1,200 rakan statues at the Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple, which is still in use as a religious site.
