With no reservation made and coming in late, we were greeted with a very modest welcome and a brief introduction with reminder of 10% service charges. With perseverance we finally was accepted to go to a very cozy little room upstairs and everything changed. Good service from attentive waiting staff, despite the poor communication at first, then came in a... More

Cozy restaurant in the Gion district of Kyoto. The speciality of the house is “Yakitori” which means BBQ, chicken, and just about anything else. Food is served mainly on skewers and you can order by the skewer or as a course with many dishes. The local Sake a must try, though they serve all other kinds of alcohol and soft... More

We booked at the last minute based on the recommendation of our hotel. From the moment we walked in the staff made us feel very unwelcome and immediately advised there was a 10% surcharge without any explanation! We selected a set menu but were presented with different options because they had run out of the food in the set menu!... More

the location is fab and so is the interior design (go for counter seats). the cooks/waiters all look like ex-host boys (its almost more about their hair) but the food was delicious. The Sukiyaki was excellent and the best were the duck meatballs- if you're not into raw egg though, skip this place- the meat is best when you have... More

Wabiya Korekido was recommended by the owner of Tempura Matsu and they are specialized in chicken cuisine with own chicken farm. Their setup is very different between lunch and dinner. They don’t accept reservation for lunch and everyone has to queue up, so is better to come at or before the restaurant opens at 11:30am. They usually have 2 kinds... More

Had a wonderful meal here. The chicken itself was a revelation. The spicing and saucing an added bonus. A beautifully presented medley of flavours and textures. Service was very warm and friendly. We were the only non-Japanese present at the counter.

We had a lot of cheaper yakitori in Japan but it's fun to try the upscale version. This place is excellent. Chicken tail was the perfect combination of fatty and juicy and the duck meatball was one of the best things we ate on the entire trip - we drank the leftover balsamic reduction with bits of meat. Some have... More

Having read positive reviews about this place, we decided to hop in for lunch. To our dismay, they only offered two lunch set options, with nary a stick of yakitori in sight. Their oyakodon was served in a stone bowl and was tasty enough, even if the rice was rather mushy. Not especially recommended as a lunch option!

If you like gourmet Yakitori this place is a must! The plates are small, but they are worth it. The staff are extremely friendly and amazing service. Try the liver pate and the noodles.

We had to have a look at this place due to the large number of positive reviews on Trip Advisor. The food is quite nice, the staff were excellent and the ambiance was fantastic. In my opinion the food was over priced for what it is. Bookings here are preferred.

Staying in Gion

Neighbourhood Profile
Gion
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
