We got a place at tosuiro at the second time of trying - we arrived too late on the thursday night at 9pm and were told it was closed - and it was worth the perseverance. We went for the second cheapest set menu (just under 4,000 yen) which involved several little supremely tasty and beautifully prepared courses including delicious... More

Being vegetarians, we are always on the hunt for the best possible vegetarian friendly restaurant wherever we visit. If you are a vegetarian and would like to try authentic Japanese and other scrumptious tofu dishes, this is a must try restaurant. We had actually tried to get into the other TA recommended restaurant (Tosuiro Kiyamachi) but it was fully booked.... More

For those looking for an authentic Japanese dining experience, this is the place for you. If you also have dietary concerns, this restaurant lists (in English) what goes into their main dishes. In addition, the staff really go above and beyond to make sure there's something there for you to eat. The setting was also very authentic. Highly recommend.

Came here as I saw the reviews that this is a vegetarian restaurant. By 'vegetarian', it means no seafood like fish or other seafood to be served too. However, the waitress asked me if I take fish and I asked if every dish has it and she said there are and asked if I am ok. So I left since... More

This hotel had some of the best tofu I'd ever had, in a city known for it. Slightly on the pricier side (3000-6000 Yuan for the set kaiseki meal), but worth it. Note: my companion ordered the cheapest set meal, and I ordered two yuba (type of tofu) dishes à la carte, and then we shared. The restaurant didn't mind... More

This place is known for its house made tofu that is used in many a dishes. They had an English menu but it didn't list everything that was on the Japanese one. An English speaking server answered all our queries regarding the menu and it was very helpful. The restaurant has sunken seating for groups as well as for seating... More

I headed there based on the recommendation of "Inside Kyoto" blog. I was a little bit anxious about going to a fancier Japanese restaurant alone since I don't speak the language, but they have an English menu and seemed used to serving clueless foreigners. I chose the cheapest tasting menu at 3,500 Yen. With a generous serving of sake, the... More

So, Kyoto is known for its tofu..ok.. So we head as recommended by the ritz Carlton, where we are staying, to this restaurant. The restaurant is hard to find because there is no English sign, which is forgiven because after all we are in Japan. Unfortunately we were seated very quickly and there really wasn't a Japanese person in the... More

Great experience with many kinds of tofu. We had a reservation and they asked about allergies so my dairy free meal was a little different from everyone else's but just as good. Price set menu with several courses including some sushi. A cool course was the steamed tofu and spinach served in a bamboo heated tub. You scooped out what... More

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
