Traditional Sweets, red bean desserts, arrowhead noodle. Must try in Kyoto. The sweetness is just the way I like, subtle and not overly sweet. The ambience is very relaxed, the staff are polite. What more can you ask for?

Nice place with many locals. They seem to enjoy the arrowhead noodles which taste strange to me with the brown syrup. Other sweets like the red bean with millet cake was yummy. But the arrowhead noodles are not for me.

Intrigued by the positive reviews, I went expecting arrowhead noodles to be delicious but my friend and I both didnt like it. The arrowhead noodles though interesting, were tasteless on its own and it basically had to be coated with the brown sugar syrup for some taste. The sweet biscuit that came with the tea was too sugary for our... More

I liked this place, a heaven in the most busy tourist arial of Kyoto. The arrow noodles was fantastic to try, but after trying other Japanese sweets, they were not my favorit, but still good and I am so glad I went here. They serve you tea, but no choice there.

Kagizen Yoshifusa is a wonderful dessert place in between Gion Shijo Station and Yasaka Shrine. The selection is small, but focused. Tourists should not fret as they have English menus available. The most recommended dish is the Gion-originated kuzukiri (葛粉), arrowroot noodles in cold, ice water with brown sugar syrup as dip. Do appreciate the texture of the noodles with... More

We love the kuzukiri with brown sugar syrup. It is absolutely delicious. You must try it when you are in Kyoto. We went there on a Saturday afternoon. There was a small queue but it moved quickly. They had a menu in English and the service was very friendly. Make a stop there when you are in Gion.

If you want to take some time to relax in your day in Gion this is the place. They have beautiful sweets and delicious green tea. This place have been open for a long time and is a favorite of the locals. There was a small line to get seated but it went fast. :) A must place to visit... More

This popular place near the Yasaka shrine is reputedly famous for traditional Kyoto desserts and it has an excellent ambience and service, to boot! It was my first time trying the special Kuzukiri dessert - translucent noodles made from arrowroot that are enjoyed with a sweet brown syrup. I also liked the Warabimochi - sweet translucent jelly covered in soy... More

Delicious traditional Japanese desserts and matcha tea - since the 1700s! Really lovely, relaxing environment to take a break and experience traditional teahouse culture. Kyoto loves sweets, and this is one of the top options. Easy to walk to from Gion station, just a few minuts away. Service is friendly and had no problem ordering.

A must try for anyone in Kyoto wanting to grab their hands on some delicious traditional Japanese dessert. Highly recommend Kuzukiri which are basically cold translucent arrowroot noodles that served with either brown or clear syrup dipping sauce (just go for the brown syrup).

Staying in Gion

Neighbourhood Profile
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
