Have to admit - I was forewarned that it takes ages to get the food after ordering. I however did go there and the warning was correct - our order was taken 15 minutes after we sat down and the first dish appeared 30 minutes...thereafter. Given the fact this is not a cook to order place, it was very amusing to hear that the miso soup is still "being cooked" (45 minutes after ordering). Food quality is reasonably average for what it is (non-Japanese fast food place), but the service aspect is their nail in the coffin - they all just move as fast as flies in November. After 45 minutes of being "cooked", miso soup was completely tasteless, other dishes were ok. It is not that entire franchise is bad - 2 weeks ago I visited similar place in Novosibirsk and what a striking difference it was. I hope that franchise owners and restaurant management will read this, but presently I am not sure I would ever go there again or would recommend anyone to.More

290 roubles, nets you 3 sets *you can choose from salad - all you can take, sushi sets, noodles, salmon in tvorog and mushrooms, fried rice and miso soups variety* The customer service is not as good though, but it is a small matter compare...to what you can get for that price in a considerably high cost of living place in Nizhniy (if compare with Asia and Europe).More

The Yakitoriya on Gorky street is one of those places you so wish would get its act together on service because if it did it would be an instant, enduring favorite. I've eaten on and off at this place for at least a couple of...years. The high point of this restaurant is the business lunch special, especially the sushi lunch where you get an all you can eat Japanese-style salad bar featuring a small number of very good choices, plus some sushi plus tea all for a low price. The sushi is modest but very tasty and not only rolls, like much provincial sushi assortments tend to be, but including some actual slices of white fish or salmon on rice. This would be fantastic if it were not for the maddeningly uneven service. About half the time when you walk in you are greeted and seated right away, a waitress comes over to take your order and rather expeditiously a pot of green tea arrives and then as you are finishing up your salad the sushi just when you want it. Wave for a check and it arrives and a few minutes later you get your change. The perfect business lunch! The problem is that about half the time it takes 15 minutes for anyone to take your order and then 45 minutes for the sushi to show up despite repeated entreaties and complaints to what appears to be the manager on duty. And sometimes even if the food is fast it takes forever, literally half an hour, to get the check, or the tea does not arrive until the meal has been finished. I have no idea why I keep visiting this place but despite the unfathomably bad service about half the time I still keep trying it every now and then. I suppose the food and value when it is good keep tricking me into trying it again, the never-ending triumph of hope over experience, always thinking that wishing will make it so. There seems to be no pattern to the lousy service, either, as I've encountered that when the restaurant was completely empty and when there were only a few people in it. I've never tried the restaurant when there are more than just a few people as that seems insanely risky in terms of slow service. There are some strategies that might help. For example, whenever I risk visiting I now always tell the manager I'm in a hurry and I know what I want, the business sushi lunch with salad bar and green tea. As soon as the waitress takes my order I ask her to bring the check right away. I bring change so I can lay down the necessary amount without waiting for change to come back. I'm not alone in this opinion as some of my friends refuse to go to this place because they don't want to risk the terrible service it has some times. On occasion I've talked such reluctant friends into trying it and, of course, we've always hit one of the occasions when service was poor. But then again I'll give it a try on my own and it will be fine and I'll think "perhaps they've gotten their act together" and then try it again and once more run into terrible service. Sigh! As I've noted in my reviews of other restaurants in Nizhny with slow service: It's true that one of the curses of restaurants in provincial towns in Russia (for all its charms Nizhny is genuinely provincial compared to Moscow) is that restaurants often have maddeningly terrible service with unfathomably long waits for a waiter or waitress to take an order, put the order into the kitchen, pick up the order and bring it to you or to materialize after a long time with the bill. But, there are restaurants where this goes more quickly and where the owners are realizing that slow service equals fewer clients. Help them get the message by avoiding places with terrible service.More
