For dinner in Kofu, I decided to have hoto, a famous Koshu specialty, so I did some research and found out that this restaurant, "Kosaku," had a good reputation. It was close to the hotel where we were staying, so we made a reservation and headed there. Houtou is a dish similar to udon noodles with lots of toppings. I had the most popular dish, "Pumpkin Hoto." It has lots of vegetables and is a food that warms the body. My husband ordered several dishes, including horse sashimi, as snacks to go with his drinks, and every dish was delicious.

Yamanashi is called Hotou, so I went to lunch. There are other tempura bowls besides hoto. There was also a gyudon, perhaps for a limited time. Ask for a hoto and it comes with a little fruit. The hoto I hadn't eaten in a while was delicious. It's a famous restaurant, so there were a lot of people lined up. But the rotation was relatively quick.

Pork noodles cooked in thick broth and lots of vegetables (pumpkin, potatoes, mushroom, cabbage, long beans..)! The noodles is different from their ramen so definitely worth a try!

Except for the fact that I was wearing non-stretch jeans and was seated in the traditional tatami room... it was great! Ordered just a basic pork Houtou soup -- miso broth and super thick udon-like noodles -- and the Torimotsu (chicken offal in a sweet sauce). These are the two dishes that I knew to be "local." It comes in a huge metal cauldron-like bowl, so it was definitely filling and hot. Perfect for cooler weather. We also got cups of the local wine which... was maybe the weakest part of the meal. The service was good. I didn't try anything else but it was very popular (lines during lunch and dinner) so I'd say it's safe to say it's a solid place to eat. There were drinks and small dishes available (if you were looking for izakaya style food, I think you could find it here).

Went here with my family during our stay in Kofu. We had an awesome first experience with the traditional dish, houtou as well as other local eats. Service was fast and friendly and the prices are reasonable.

This was a perfect spot to taste the local flavors and specialty noodles called houtou which are like really fat udon noodles. That being said the wild boar houtou soup was fantastic but quite filling so I would recommend sharing unless you are ravenous. They also have beat if you want to try something gamey. The soba was also excellent with a perfect mix of fungi and vegetables... the broth used pushes it above other soba dishes I have had while in Japan. Great service as you would expect from a family restaurant!

The texture of the houtou was fantastic. We had houtou at an earlier occasion, but the thick noodles and the broth served at this restaurant was way more superior. We liked the vegetables cooked in the broth. However, the huge serving took us by surprise. We could not finish the huge pot and regretted ordering a pot each. Two people could comfortably share a pot. The chicken offal was delicious, though slightly salty on the taste-buds. The ambience was good. Good space for dining, if you do not mind sitting on the floor.

In Kofu the two 'must eat' foods are houtou (a kind of thicker than udon noodle in a soup with amongst other things kabocha pumpkin) and tori motsuni - or chicken offal in thick sauce. The third local speciality is basashi - raw horse. We had all three at this excellent restaurant. This is not fine dining but simply an up-market noodle place, but none the less the service is excellent. The houtou options are extensive including ones with a meat topping, including wild boar and (the first time I've ever seen it on any restaurant menu) bear meat! We had regular houtou and one bowl between two, with an order of basashi and torimotsuni to share is fine between two - it really is filling. I have no comparison for the houtou as it was the first time I'd eaten it, but it was very tasty, heavy on vegetables so seemed healthy, and I loved the texture of the noodles themselves. I have had basashi and torimotsuni. Both were excellent and as good as I'd had elsewhere. Basashi has a rich meaty taste not too far from beef. It is a bit pricey though to be honest. The torimotsuni is done is a thick sticky salty sweet sauce a little like teriyaki and really turns the chunks of meat into a delicious treat. Much better value than the basashi. We also experimented with bamotsuni which we assumed would be pieces of horsemeat done in the same style - however it comes out as kind of a horse tripe soup. I know that sounds like something that would have been served up during the siege of Leningrad but try it! It is delicious and probably the best local food we had in Yamanashi. A word of warning - it does seem to get quite busy after office hours - locals by the look of them, always a good sign with a restaurant with a touristy reputation - but it is worth going early or late to avoid the queues.

Had the noodles they recommended, very bland taste. Lots of vegetables in it though, so its healthy food. Bring your own pillow to sit on ☺

Had kinoko houtou. Served in a large steel bowl with large servings of noodles (oh how thick and hearty they are!) and 6 or 7 vegetables. Very good flavor. Stable quality and service as I visited this reataurant 4 times so far in the span of 4 years. Good location in Kofu train station area. The only wish to this reataurant is the pricing and the serving size. If they could provide smaller servings at lower price, that could attract more wide range of customers, as their bowls are all large and relatively expensive for noodles.

Massive bowls of noodley, soupy goodness. The noodles were thick and so very good. It's also a shoes off, sit on mats type place which we enjoyed as we hadn't been to any others on our trip.

we had a short trip to this city Kofu and walked into this wonderful restaurant. there is one dish that was very memorable and I had to recommend here. Located on the left side of the rotary at the south exit of Kofu Station, we entered the restaurant a little after it opened at 11am on Sunday, but it is a popular restaurant so about half the seats were filled. Inside the restaurant, there are tables on the right side and tatami tables with sunken kotatsu on the left side. This time we ordered pumpkin hoto and stewed chicken offal, giraffe. First, we had the well-cooked chicken offal with beer. Soon the iron pot that was brought to us contained miso soup, hoto, pumpkin, burdock, wild vegetables, shiitake mushrooms, green onions, carrots, Chinese cabbage, taro, and potatoes. We alternated between the hot hoto and the cold beer, and it was very delicious. Incidentally, the portion of stewed chicken offal was a bit too much for one person. There are still partitions on the tables... You have to insert and remove your credit card when paying... Coronavirus prevention? Well, if that's the rule of the restaurant, I'll follow it.
