Thursday 5th September, we had arrived in Sanur and we were waiting for our hotel room to be ready so that we could check in. While we waited we went out exploring and we ended up here, it was the nearest bar to our hotel.
It really was nothing special, it was all a bit tired and in need of some repairs and attention. The gents toilets were rather dire.
The staff were friendly enough and the beers were cold, according to the menu a large bottle of beer 40,000 Rupiah, roughly £2.35. However when the bill was presented there was 10% tax added.

I think this part of Sanur is a microcosm of Bali, despite being high season there were few actual tourists staying here. Mostly Indonesian day visitors in cars, presumably renting villas further inland and European backpackers getting the ferry to Gili. This means that traffic in Kuta is as bad as Jakarta, but few Indonesians get out of their cars, preferring to drive around looking for malls. Policy makers only have themselves to blame, young Australians have been treated shoddily and a good number deported. That they are no longer visiting Bali in such numbers should come as no surprise, that was the intention. But who is taking their place? Visitors from Surabaya in cars? A lot of businesses are going to go bankrupt.
A typical Indonesian reaction to a loss of business is to increase ones prices, but not Made, so now it is about the best value in the area, apart from warungs. So meals at Made Two range from $3 to $5. I seem to think the food is getting better, or is it simply the competition is getting worse. Now that I live in Java I eat Indonesian food everyday so when at Made's I ate mostly western food, some of which was very good (i.e. the steak sandwich). My wife was able to order spicey Indonesian food, the ikan bakar was particularly good, although they are well aware of how she likes it. I no longer drink alcohol and found the iced coffee to be something to look forward to.
We had booked into the nearby Hotel Mentari, yet again, but knowing the food to be poor on a room only basis. Breakfast at Made Two was large, better than at the hotel (not saying anything) and half the price of the hotel.
I now consider Made himself a good friend and somehow it seems worth returning to this part of Sanur just to see Made. All the staff also remembered us and made a big fuss of us. New visitors to Made Two will be amazed at these comments as they will be treated with some Indonesian reserve, but let me assure you this is not rudness nor a lack of concern. Most of the staff have pretty good English so engage them and you will find them very friendly.
Now if you are a backpacker going to Gili maybe Made Two is too expensive, but he does have free wifi if you buy a drink. If you are from Surabaya and driving round in your car, keep driving Made Two is not or you. But if you are staying in this part of Sanur make Made Two your local and you will be rewarded.

I ordered spaghetti with meat sauce to go and it came in a giant box with very little spaghetti and the meat sauce in a little plastic bag tied up which was kinda funny. The taste is very average. Much better options around

We stumbled across this restaurant whilst looking for a supermarket. We went for the set 2 course menu. It was about £3.50 each and the food was just awesome, so much so we went back again twice more.

Went in here as the menu looked good. We ordered red wine to be told it had run out. Service was a bit grim, they were too preoccupied withntheir mobile phones tonpay any attention tontheir guests. The food was very bland, certainly nothing like what we have had on the beach front. We wont be going back, notveven on Monday whennthey hope to have another bottle of red wine!

Made Two is close by the Mentari Hotel and often becomes an alternative restaurant and social club to the hotel. I remember Made Two from over 5 years ago and found the food to be too bland, for my taste it still is, but with fewer western visitors to Sanur and more Chinese, it has become better. Nevertheless once we got to know Made, they are quite capable of serving well spiced Balinese and Indonesian food to mine and my wife's taste.
What really makes Made's is the atmosphere he creates within the restaurant amongst his staff and customers. Western visitor may find Indonesians shyness and playfulness an indication of bad service, it is anything but and all staff are very happy and impart this to their customers.
Made himself was happy to recommend more authentic restaurants to my wife and I. He also showed me the way to the Masjid (Mosque) which is opposite and a large and beautiful place, worth visiting for Muslims and non-Muslims alike. He attempted to engage with all customers, at their level. Although he largely stays behind the bar and this could be mistaken for not caring about seated diners. Made himself is a Balinese Hindu, but once he found out about our common Kejawen practices he really opened up to us. We talked at length about Nyai Roro Kidul, readers who have no idea what I am talking about, should ask Made why they should not wear green on the beach and they will open up a aspect of Indonesian culture few westerners have any appreciation of. Also look out for the ghost of a beautiful young girl with flowers in her hair (apparently an ex-cleaner), who often stands behind Made, you'll only see her if you want to, but all the staff know she is there.
Overall there is a good choice of food ranging from western snacks (which I often crave and were as good, or bad, as you get in Indonesia) to more authentic Balinese food. We love fresh fish and the Ikan Bakar, they made for us Balinese style was very good, but you have to ask to get something so authentic.
We didn't eat at Made's anything like everyday of our holiday, nor would we. But we did go in for a drink and a chat, sometimes for most of the day. If Nobby, one of the regulars (for 6 month every year) is sitting at the bar, it's well worth engaging with him. As it is with Made himself, he will, off course, show some Indonesian reserve, but if you are up for it you will be taken on a fascinating journey of Indonesia thinking and culture.

Staff looked bored and service wasn't great.
The place was dead, dark and empty.
The pasta savoury and pasta carbonara was undercooked, rubbery and SO dry with huge chunks of onion, so much pepper I couldn't eat mine as it burned. We could hear the food being cooked outside and the chef was sneezing every 5 minutes very loudly which put us off our food.
The toilets are gross.
Don't recommend it at all.
