Genius Cafe is a wonderful “find” in Sanur!

While we were visiting Sanur, Genius Cafe became our home away from home. The hotel where we stayed had very limited vegan options, so every morning we headed to the beach to Genius Cafe for breakfast. We tried almost everything (all delicious) and had the vegan pancakes with fresh fruit twice. We also visited for a lunch and supper (they have live jazz on Fridays, 5:00-7:00 PM. Yeah!). For us, as vegans, the menu had lots of options and everything was fresh and delicious. The wait staff were very friendly and loved to chat with us. Dilan served us breakfast during our final visit and was fascinated to see pictures of snow in Canada.

Best vibes for beach coffee and relaxing meal!

I travelled to Bali solo and was recommended this place through my Air BnB. I’ve spent most mornings here so far because it’s right on the beach, has good wifi, good coffee and a really nice variety of food. It’s tucked away in a little spot at the end of the pathway on the beach so it’s quaint and quiet but still good for people watching as they wander by on the path. The servers are super nice. I spoke to Jeni for a while and when she found out it was my last day in Bali, she brought me a free dessert and was very sweet. The yoga studio is also right beside here so it’s great for a pre or post yoga session. Super accessible by foot or bicycle. Highly recommend.

Valentines Dinner

My partner and I booked a table for Valentine’s Day and oh, Genuis Cafe delivered. Outstanding customer service, our waiter recommended not only tasty cocktails but delicious meals. The live music was beautiful and the view nothing short of spectacular. Can’t wait to return here!

Went there due to some fantastic reviews on Trip Advisor. It is a beautiful place with wonderful ambience. Plenty of friendly attentive staff. Maybe it was just the meals we chose as both were very disappointing. My red curry, recommended by the waitress, was very bland considering the ingredients listed on the menu. My husband had the Ikan Pepis, a traditional fish dish wrapped in banana palm leaves. It came with rice, broccoli and beans and was very dry and tasteless. When ordering, also did not notice the plus 21% tax and service on top of the already expensive prices. The previous 2 nights we had fantastic meals from 2 warungs further along the beach towards the airport at much lower prices, especially the drinks which were almost 3 times the price here.

Had read so many good reviews we decided to make the trek here. The taxi driver was not even sure how to get there. He dropped us in a car park and we walked about 5 mins. The place was certainly busy as we discovered Happy Hour has just finished at 7pm. Thankfully we had phoned ahead and booked for table on beach. It was actually a dirty lounge for two and a dirty beanbag for the third person. The service was pretty good considering they were busy. A documentary was playing on a screen for bored kids to watch. We ordered mushroom pizza (hubby said was pretty good), veggie burger (charcoal bun was rock hard & inedible. Greasy overcooked potato chips). The bowl with chicken was also very disappointing compared to many other great venues around town. We walked back along the beach front and treated ourselves to gelato at Massimo

Bland with lousy service

Super disappointed. Having had lunch here a few times, I thought it would be appropriate for visiting friends who are vegetarian. Service is always marginal but this evening the complete pits. It would be one thing if they were short staffed, but to see staff hanging around behind the counter or hanging around talking to themselves while I wait and wait and wait for service is really annoying. Food was below average, bland; not just mine but three of us had same comments.

The waitress was in a bad mood?

Surprisingly, the waitress (maybe) not in a good mood. She burst out her emotion to us. We just arrived and wanted to order. After looking at the menu, I want Fresh Coconut. My partner want Hot Latte, he raised his hand, waved to a waitress and she looked us. The waitress come, but not to us, she go to bill machine behind us. We (once again) talk to her, “mba...” in a friendly way. Suddenly, she got angry LOL! She said, “Be patient, don’t you see? I have to input the close bill first, after that I can come to write your order, hey be patient.” Or in bahasa Indonesia: “Sabar, lihat kan yah, saya harus input close bill dulu, kan habis itu saya bisa ke sini, jadi sabar dulu dong bisa kan yah?” Oh WOW. We were so surprised. I even let 5 seconds without a word to let her control her emotion first and then I asked her “mba, wow, are you not in a good mood? He he he, why you get angry?” She tried to fake-laughing and said “he he he, yeahh be patient okay” oh WOW. So yeah, maybe she was not in a good mood. It’s normal. People can have their bad days. But the way she answered was not nice, the way she blabbering to us and told us to be PATIENT was not nice at all. Dear mba, I hope you will have a good day so you don’t have to yell at customer like that again, manner please. I am definitely won’t go back here again, thank you for serving fresh coconut without a spoon and a not so good-heart shaped latte.

It's pleasure to come in for finish my work while enjoying beach view. I feel warmth from the people. They provide fast wifi too, so helpfull to complete my work today. Provide delicious food and suitable for those who are on diet program. If you like dark choco cake mix with nut please order peanut butter slice here. Enjoy your day.. :)

Nice lunch and brekkie

This is our second time to Genius Cafe,the food here are soooo delicious and fresh!!Their fruits and vegetables are all from organic farm in Bali, that's why they're so fresh and healthy.The atmosphere is very chill and relax just beside the beach, you can just spend half day here or bring your laptop as home office or just laid down on the sofa to chill. Jeni and all staffs are very helpful and cheerful too. We love to have meals here while we are staying in Sanur.

Not so Genius levels of service.

My partner reserved a table at Genius for my birthday due to how pretty it looked and the good reviews it has. We were sat outside on the beach and the service started well, we ordered a starter (3 dips with nachos) which was really nice with a mojito and an apple and mango cider. We decided to move tables as where we were sat wasn’t really ideal for eating a proper meal as it was more of a lounge seating arrangement. We opted to sit at a table which staff showed us to and accommodated. This is where the evening just went downhill, and we felt forgotten about, we had menus given to us and we sat with the menus for about 30 minutes before I flagged down a member of staff asking to order mains. We both ordered the Thai Red Curry, which was full of flavour and full of spice (a bit too much for me, however this is a traditional dish so I have no complaints here). During our meal, no member of staff even bothered to ask us whether our food was okay, or if we wanted any further drinks, there was a particular member of staff who was initially serving us over by the beach who seemed more interested in an American couple than any other customers, ourselves included. When we had our mains eventually cleared away when I had to flag down another member of staff to get the bill, we felt we couldn’t order a dessert due to how poor the service had been. Once we were paying for our food, the waitress didn’t even ask if we had a nice experience, or if we had a nice meal, just zero interest in how we had been treated, if we were asked, I would’ve been honest with her. Overall, the food here is really good and I have zero complaints with it, the service was absolutely appalling, the worst levels of service we had experienced since being in Bali. Maybe we were just unlucky with the staff on shift here, or if it’s a one off, however, we personally won’t be recommended Genius as a place to dine.

Overhyped and overpriced - didn’t like this A BIT

Terrible service & staff. Waited for our menues 10 minutes, then 10 more for drink menue. Also they are very old, dirty and can’t even see description and prices. Oh, and after ordering we discovered there were pages missing…. Food is tasteless and not worth the price they are selling it. Dirty spoon came with a coffee and all the dishes has chopped off edges as on photo. Overall experience - 1/10, don’t recommend.

The Worst Customer Service in Bali & Mediocre Food That Wants to Be "Healthy"

This must be the place with biggest egos and zero authenticity. There isn't a genuine smile in the place. I've tried it a couple of times on separate trips to Bali. The first time I was literally pushed by the staff as they had an event. This time I got to cash register to pay and the girl took my money, her coworker came and started a conversation. She stopped what she was doing with me and instead of just returning my change continued with the mashed potatoes and left to the kitchen. Only minutes later did she return to give me the change. During the whole time neither of them acknowledged that I was waiting there. Shouldn't it go in the order of first come first serve? As for the food: it wants to make believe it's healthy but their vegan options are quite greasy.

Breakfast includes free coffee. But when I ordered breakfast, the waiter did not say about it. I found out about it after breakfast. I asked the waiter for coffee and he replied that I was 10 minutes late for the free coffee. And when I asked why you didn’t tell me about coffee when I ordered breakfast, I didn’t get a clear answer. They never gave me coffee.

Nice Enough, Not Great

Genius offers a pleasant ambience with light music and a view of the ocean as well as a shelter from the many people selling trinkets or offering massages. The menu is quite interesting with vegetarian and vegan options. I tried the grilled fish sandwich which was pretty tasty (on a charcoal colored bun) and some very good fried potatoes which had a pleasant crispness to them. My partner had the Asian Salad which was pretty sad looking and not any better tasting. Service was slow and it was difficult to get someone to bring the bill to pay. Nicely, though, they bring the card machine to the table so payment is easy. A small service fee is included.
