The best restaurant in Thekkady

We were searching inThekkady for a traditional Keralan veg meal on a banana leaf. Eventually a jeep driver directed us to Tusker Cafe telling us it was the best in town. Well I can assure you that he wasn't wrong. We were given a very warm welcome by the owner and received a very attentive service from the serving staff. We had the veg meal on a banana leaf and augmented this with a large whole fish cooked in a banana leaf. The food was absolutely delicious and of a very high standard and quality. We had been in India for a month before visiting this restaurant and I can honestly say this was the best meal we had eaten. It was so good we went back the next day and again received a fantastic service.Our Tamil driver was equally impressed. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone seeking good quality traditional food at very reasonable prices.

Lunch experience of Kerala traditional food in Tusker Cafe

We are pure vegetarian and wanted to try very authentic Kerala traditional food on Banana leaf. Our tour guide recommended us to go to Tusker Cafe. To our surprise, we were so happy to have the lunch there, and Mr. Roy made our experience even more memorable. He made sure to have the food served and also had taken care of for even a tiny need. We will highly recommend to try this "Tusker Cafe" out without fail if you are in this area. Thank you once again for everything.

Simple but very welcoming and tasty restaurant

Had two lovely meals here. Prices are very reasonable and none of that higher price for foreigners found in other locations. Staff and the owner very pleasant and helpful. On the 2nd night the owner gave us some different accompaniments to go with the meal which was appreciated! Food specialises in local dishes - I liked the fish fry in particular. On the edge of one part of town so quieter and decor is fun and welcoming. Highly recommend!

Great Food & Hospitality

Mr. Praveen is a caring host. He welcomed us and helped us choose some of the best dishes on the menu. Their food us simply amazing. Everything we ordered tasted great, typically local in flavor and feel. We relished some great fish and prawns. Don’t miss their ‘Fish Polluchathu’. Kerala Parotta, Kappa with fish curry and Puttu with chicken curry were simply soul warming! And when in Thekkady / Kumily don’t miss going to this very simple, yet stylish and welcoming eatery. The rates are very affordable for their portion size, quality and authentic taste of Malabar. We went back the next evening to relish their piping hot Chai (Chaya) and Gobi 65!

Authentic South Indian Cuisene

If you are looking for authentic South India cuisine in a quaint roadside setting with fantastic hospitality, clean environment, and excellant value for money then look no further than Tuskers. Praveen and his team are fantastic! I travel all over India leading small tours and this cafe is always a must stop off for a meal that is a true experience.

Friendly Service and Good Food

Tusker Cafe is a good place to try some authentic Kerala food. We ordered the Kerala Veg Thali and it was served in a traditional style. The staff was super friendly and helpful, especially since we weren't familiar with the items in the dish. The first floor offers a nice view and a cool breeze.

Really great fresh food!

This is the best food I’ve had I. India in the 2 months I’ve been here. So fresh and tasty. I had fish which was delicious. Food is served on a banana leaf with all the accompaniments. Nothing is wasted as it is either composted or fed to animals. The service was very good - the cafe was packed - a sign of how good it is. It is next to the bus stop for going to Periyar Tiger Reserve . Think I’ll go back for dinner tonight.

Hope to visit Tusker Cafe again!

Great place for authentic Kerala cuisine. Enjoyed the thali at lunch and went back in the evening for appam and stew which was amazingly delicious. The steamed fish and fried fish were incredibly fresh and tasty. Ambience was also warm and welcoming the owner Mr Praveen is very friendly and considerate.

Home away from home

The host and the owner of the restaurant, Pravin, was super friendly and so so welcoming. I felt as if I had known him for years. The meal I chose was a chicken biriani, cooked in a banana leaf potli and was beautifully flavoured. I can not stress how great the waiters were. Service beyond expectations and tasty food.

Great place to eat. Highly recommend

We dined here 3 times over the last 2 days once for lunch and twice in the evenings. Each time and food and service were superb. We tried a variety of dishes including fish pollichathu, mixed vegetable curry, fish curry, the Veg Thali and the squid Marsala. All were delicious. The staff were very friendly and efficient. Cost is very reasonable too. Highly recommend.

Fabulous Find!!

What a delight — our guide suggested this open air, local restaurant was a highlight of our visit to this area. From the traditional way of serving on a banana leaf to the excellent flavors of the fish and shrimp. So many complimentary sauces, chutneys and sides. There was not a weak link! Best meal we have ever eaten without a fork! (Although they are available)

One of the better options in Thekkady

The cafe has a lively vibe to it. It’s very unlike other restaurants in Thekkady. The owner is very friendly and will help you out with recommendations. We liked the kari meen meal a lot. Since we weren’t very hungry and had very limited food in an unlimited setup, the owner slashed 25% if the bill to be fair, that was quite a gesture!!

Nice food and hospitality…

Visited for a lunch. Good hospitality by them. Food was good. Served on a banana leaf adds to the authentic Kerala experience. Fish steamed in banana leaf is their signature dish and do not miss it… simple but tasty and hygienic… Their fresh juices are also worth mentioning…. Go and enjoy this hospitality and food…

Simple place and Delicious Food

Its difficult to believe that you can eat a delicious Kerala traditional meal without burning a hole in your pocket. Just head to Tusker Café situated close to the Kadathanadan Kalari centre after an evening show of Kalarippayattu and Kathakali and eat to your hearts content. We had the Vegetarian meal served on a banana leaf, the chicken curry and the beef curry with Appams and Malabar parathas and they were all excellent. The place is small and very busy but the service is quick. This is one place where you have to eat in Thekkady.

An excellent value unpretentious cafe, close to Periyar National Park entrance

Disappointed that the first dishes we ordered weren’t available, we were very happy with the food that we eventually settled on. The food was all fresh, flavoursome and excellent value for money. Unfortunately the mozzies also seem to be fans of this restaurant, so be prepared!
