A few years ago this place offered middling fusion food and rather haplessly tried to combine Indian with Mexican cuisine. For a year now, the new chef, Althaf, has been setting the standard for healthy, fresh-produce based Kerala style-cuisine at affordable places at Warehouse Café...& Restaurant. Althaf is a cook by passion. He learned his craft from his mother, refined it in college and got his training at Brunton Boatyard, a five-star hotel in Fort Kochi. For a few years he had his own restaurant together with a group of friends on Vasco da Gama square, but the land lady terminated their contract, and that place is a chi-chi pastry shop with a chi-chi gallery attached to it now. Instead, Althaf and his crew have moved into Warehouse, and they are making this place one of the the best Kerala cuisine places in Kochi in the affordable price range (Brunton is also good, but much more expensive). Althaf makes it a point to use only fresh local produce and avoid additives. The head waiter will always recommend coconut prawn curry because it is his personal favorite (but it takes a lot of preparation, and the head waiter's prawn curry fetish is beginning to go on the chef's nerves). But really anything on this list is great. I had the local fish curry, which features the catch of the day rather than some older fish held over because nobody ordered it the day before; I also had the beef stew with curry leaves; and of course the coconut prawn curry. Which means I returned there for three days in a row, once for dinner and twice for lunch.. All meals were simply excellent, and even more than that: great sensory experiences. At affordable prices.More
