We just returned from a family trip to Machu Picchu and started our adventure with a short stay in Lima. I had written down Isolina as a restaurant stop after reading a NYT article a few years back and decided to give it a try- I am glad we made the stop! It was truly one of those meals where I pulled back and declared "that is the best meal of my life". We were a table of 9 and we had made reservations about a week before (reservations are recommended). The place is small but has a very open feeling thanks to the "barn like" doors that open up to the night air. We stuck with the waiter's recommendations and had a variety of family sized portions- everything is "VERY" big at Isolina so watch what you order. We loved a traditional dish of rice, ground beef, fried plantains and egg. The real winner of the evening though was a special off the blackboard menu- the pork shoulder slow roasted in a chile sauce. This was hands down one of the best dishes I have ever eaten. I know it seems like I am being a bit over the top, but this is truly a MUST VISIT spot in a great neighborhood of Lima. Enjoy!!!

We forgot to make a reservation. Make a reservation. But it only took 45 min to get in, so we walked a market up the street while waiting. The food was served family-style, and we shared three dishes between five people. Zero complaints across the board. The food was tasty, the service was quick, and the atmosphere was fun with the open entryway. It is noisy, but that’s part of the fun. You get to experience the bustle of Barranco while dining - not something you get in every restaurant. I would put this restaurant on your list while visiting Lima!

I went twice and the food and drinks are amazing, is Peruvian food and is so delicious.
You can star with the starter after the main courses are so big that you can share with two of people and the last ask for dessert you are gonna lick your fingers.
The only issue you have is that you have to go very early to get a sit there or wait and walk around the neighbourhood calles Barranco

This would have been a 5, based on our first visit with a food tour for lunch.
Food consistently was great both at lunch and a later dinner. High quality ingredients, excellent prep, clear pride in Peruvian cuisine. Delicious!
However when we went for dinner on a Monday night, we had surprisingly poor service throughout.
—Though the place was empty, when we asked to sit by a window, we were fairly rudely sat at a table by a wall quite close to the restrooms. I understand when tables are reserved. However, the place remained half empty the entire time we were there, and the tables we asked for remained empty.
—The waiter was friendly enough, enthusiastic about the menu. We ordered an appetizer, large salad, and 1/2 an entree. The menu clearly states a full entree is for three *or more* people. The waiter pushed us hard to order a full entree; In this case, two pounds of beef for two people! (The table next to us had ordered five dishes for five people, same waiter, tremendous amount of food left over and clearly unhappy about it.) Then we never saw him again.
—No one checked on us for drinks, dessert, etc. There were plenty of waitstaff, and they were not busy.
—No one rushed us of course to leave, as standard in Lima etc. However when we signaled for the check, the last server was just rude. No discussion, no eye contact, just hyper...efficient.
All in all, we wished we had only gone once.

We visited this restaurant for dinner. We had to wait slightly for a table, so it is best to book in advance. The restaurant is styled in a way that they offer local dishes, how you would find in a local family's house. They also offer local dishes which are sized to serve 2-3 people. We ordered the tacu tacu, which was delicious! It is perfect for anyone who is looking for an authentic meal and huge portions.

Situated in lively Barranco, Isolina is a Peruvian jewel of a restaurant we discovered by accident.
A relatively small space gives you the look at the kitchen. We were seated at the bar and chose some Peruvian sangria to start off the evening which was an excellent choice.
The plates are quite big, we ordered smaller versions of the plates but they were still huge so make sure to share 1 between 2 people at least, or more.
Anything you choose to eat there will be delicious as everything is prepared fresh and before your own eyes.
Definitely recommend!!

Given the reviews here, I had higher expectations for this restaurant. Granted, I was mostly looking for vegetarian or fish dishes since I don’t eat beef or poultry, and there weren’t many at all. The ceviche was very good, but the escabeche was very, very salty. The only seafood options were on the specials board or through substitutions. My fish was again very salty and not particularly flavorful. The service was very spotty. We had to ask repeatedly for water bottles that never came, used plates were not changed between appetizers and entrees and there wasn’t much a smile with the service. All said, I’m sure there are better options in town!

This restaurant was recommended to us by a few local foodies, and it didn't disappoint. The food was memorable, the staff attentive, and the quality great for the price. The only issue was the waiting time for one of our dishes, a Peruvian stew that takes 10+ hours to cook and apparently a good 40-50 minutes to get ready once an order is placed.

With no reservations we walked in at about 7:45 on a Saturday night. Nice people and good service. We had two beers, a salad and a well cooked rib dish that fell off the4 bones, it there were any, with rice and beans. The food was really good. The ambiance interesting as a foreigner as every other customer was local.

Went on the recommendation of a colleague who used to live in Lima. It was three of us, I had the maracuyá chilcano, another had the lime one and another one a cocktail. We split the cebiche con chicharrón de pulpo, escabeche de bonito and jalea de pejerey. All three were amazing, although probably the jalea was my favorite, since the sauce went perfectly with the crunchiness of the little fish. The two others were great too. We were stuffed at the end. The ambience was amazing and loved barranco. The total was 200 soles, so about 20 dollars each!! A lot less that what I paid for much more mediocre food in Miraflores.

Do yourself a favor..eat here! Isolina is a small restaurant in San Martin in the Barranco neighborhood of Lima. It is right on San Martin, but not that easy to see. We walked past it once not realizing it was there, but finding it is the start of a wonderful dining experience. We went at 3:00pm on a Monday as the restaurant closes at 5:00pm on Mondays. We were lucky to be seated upstairs right away. After reviewing the menu options we opted to share the salad appetizer (one of the very best salads I have ever eaten…see photo) and share the small portion of the beef short ribs with rice and beans. Man, are we happy we ordered the “small” portions as portion size here large to say the least. We were full and then some from the portion size we shared. Food is served family style as well. The short ribs were “fall off the bone” tender with a gravy that was excellent and even better spooned over our rice. We had a couple of local beers as well. Service was helpful, friendly and professional. All I can say is….eat here! Period!

Try the Tiradito. Tiradito is in my opinion, a superior version of ceviche. The fish is raw until just before being served, when the yellow citrus cause is poured over.
The lomo saltado is great here, as are the drinks and service.

Incredibly casual and only open for lunch. Reservations are imperative and easy to acquire via their website. Dishes are incredibly and delightfully rustic, authentically Peruvian and prepared with what seems to be lots of slow cooking and layered flavors. Menu changes regularly but our favorites were butifarra, stewed chicken gizzards(our absolute favorite), chaufa(fried rice), and aji la gallina(chicken stew). The Aji la Gallina was very hearty, rich, and reminded me of a Peruvian version of southern chicken and dumplings. Papa a la huacaina sauce was good. Tacu tacu with liver was very homey, but not a dish we enjoyed. Get half portions to share as they are still huge and hard to finish. We ordered way too much but we’re able to get it to go and share with less fortunate people in the area. Dishes may be rustic but service is upscale, casual, and attentive.

This place is great not just their food but they make extra effort especially if you are not familiar with their menu. They have large servings for a good price. Lots of local come to this place as it was referred to us by a local Peru ani that lives in Miraflores. The pisco sour is exceptional. The presentation of every dish we ordered is simple yet appetizing. Our server tried to explain some of the ingredients and how it’s prepared. We ate everything from our order that we ended walking along the shoreline back to our hotel. Overall we had a very good experience at this restaurant.

This is one of the few, if not the only, restaurant that we found in Peru that had a line at the door. Make a reservation if you can or just wait. After two weeks in Peru we ate here on our last night after getting word that this is one of the best places to go in Lima. We were not disappointed and walked away knowing we just had the best meal of our trip. The servings are generous and are meant to be shared and after you see the size of a main course you will understand.
Peruvian food elevated to a high culinary level that matches what I expect to get at an upscale restaurant in my New Orleans home.

2 perfect days in Lima
As the gateway to all that Perú has to offer, Lima is often mistakenly treated as a layover city, with travelers jetting off to Cusco as quickly as they can. By doing so, they miss the rich history the country’s capital city has to offer: both ancient and modern-day art, a shopping mall with incredible ocean views, and world-renowned cuisine.
