Rakuya apparently means "fun" in Japanese. While I'm not entirely sure I left with such an experience, it was a pleasant one nonetheless. Food: all dishes served were good, with the standouts being the sashimi and sushi. Sashimi was really fresh, only thing it was...warm which is rather off-putting. Sushi was delicious- combined with the fresh produce, the glazes over each individual piece really helped elevate the experience. Another special mention was for the chawanmushi- the parsley(?) puree it was served with help freshen up the tender egg, and the truffle added great aroma and earthiness to it, resulting in a surprisingly balanced dish. The rest of the dishes were executed decently, even if they weren't particularly memorable. Good classic Japanese fare at very reasonable prices (4/5). Ambience/Service: this is where this place's name really makes the experience fall flat. If the restaurant's motto is fun, and I didn't particularly get the sensing from its food, I expect it to be shown in its service. Service was unfriendly, with no smiles or warmth from the chefs/servers. The only one who had some semblance of pleasantness was from the waitress. Otherwise, the dishes were all introduced to you in monotonous voices and dead expressions- exactly the opposite of a 'fun' experience. Another thing worth noting- they have two seatings, one from 6-8pm and another from 830pm. We went for the earlier one at 630pm and were the only ones there, which made this whole unfriendly experience that much worse. Every time we were eating our dishes, all we felt were every single staff's eyes boring into us, making us feel extremely rushed. At the 740pm mark, the chef promptly reminded us (unsmilingly) that we still had two dishes left and the next seating was coming in at 830pm. At 800pm the bill was brought to us without our asking, and as we were halfway through our desserts, we had to gobble it down as the 1.5 hour of both concious/subconscious rushing finally got to us. To be fair, service was prompt and efficient, since we hardly had to ask for our drinks to be refilled. It was just extremely cold and that sadly was our main takeaway from the experience. (2.5/5) TL;DR Summary: Good food at very reasonable prices, but don't expect much (or anything) from their service. Unfortunate since this place has plenty of potential with its food but its service really holds it back.More

If you enjoy to experience no customer service, no integrity, and dishonesty then this is the place for you. We visited Rakuya “the racket” on a friend’s recommendation as he had enjoyed the food, whiskey, and sake. Unfortunately, we never made it that far into...the meal. We decided to cut our “no experience” meal short and ask for the bill after a single drink and sashimi platter. This is when the real award winning serviced shined brightest as they swindled us on the sashimi platter ordered after never advising the menu charges. Nor did they offer any attempt at an apology for any misunderstanding. Real class acts. They should continue to have single visit customers given their dishonesty and no customer service concept. If they reply to this review it will be by far the most service and explanation provided.More

2nd time eating at Rakuya - I can't fault the fish, the presentation and general experience. The Chef is engaging, chatty but not overly so, explains the dishes and clearly knows what he is doing. Did the Hoshi omakase, which is the top choice on...the menu - everything was on point except for the dessert which I think could be improved. That aside, the rest of the omakase was great. But, as we know, with high quality sashimi and sushi there comes a price, and this will put a decent dent in your wallet, so it's a special occasion kind of place if you're going for the full omakase experience.More

Decided to give this a go with my mate and his new girlfriend and we weren't disappointed. Rakuya is a new establishment that's right along a very competitive stretch of food businesses, and the fact that they are still maintaining their high standards speaks well...of the dedication to quality here, even after a year or two of being in business. Used the Entertainer promo to get the set lunch. Tried the Kurobuta pork, pan-fried salmon and Barachirashi sets. Could taste the quality of the ingredients that they used, and it was nice that the sets came with chawanmushi and other stuff too. The pork especially, I have to call out. Tender with not too much fats. One for a return visit to try their Omakase sets (which are also on Entertainer)More

I was offered a fun, intimate and gastronomical experience at Rakuya and I absolutely loved it. Since this was an omakase experience, dishes were served one after the other and every new dish seemed better or comparable to the ones we were served before! The...sashimi was fresh and every ingredient on the plate had something to add to the flavour profile of the dish. I especially loved dining with the chef who was super friendly and made the dining experience so comfortable for us. Pro tip - If the chef suggests you eat the Wagyu beef with garlic chips and a small dollop of wasabi, try the beef once on its own and then try the chef's suggestion. It completely blew my mind. Take the chef's suggestions, trust me.More

If you are ever in the neighbourhood (East Coast Road) you should visit Rakuya for Lunch or Dinner. I went down for Lunch with a Friend and the restaurant has an extensive set lunch menu. The ambience was nice and quiet. The food was great,...fresh and tasty. Will definitely come back again! Thanks Chef!More

I have never expect to find a nice Japanese fusion in Katong. It is a surprise to find this one here. Excellent salmon carpaccio with truffle oil, melt in your mouth and with excellent umami. Excellent chawanmushi with foiea gras and truffle, with generous goie...gras quantity on top of it...recommended. Premium sashimi is nice although i have better in other places but very very acceptable quality level in singapore. The Highball and three sake sampler are not our favorite but they have other sake options to choose from. If you like cheese, do try the scallop grilled with cheese, the scallop in this restaurant is very sweet and fresh.More

This is a solid Japanese restaurant in Katong run by a talented and friendly Malaysian chef. We went there for lunch, which was great and amazing value! We came back for the Omakase dinner and it did not disappoint! We enjoyed all dishes and the...sashimi was fresh and delicious. I just wish we had more sushi as part of the dinner courses, but only because it was amazing. Recommended if in Katong!More

The food is prapered by a chef who had his cooking Education and experience in Japan. Ingredients even tomatoes are from Japan. There is a fix menu. I think menu changes slightly every day. They did not keep their promise for our reservation and we...had to wait half an hour to be seated. Although they served us free uzo, to show that they were sorry. The Chef also forgot to peel of the gelatin covering of one of the ingredients in a soup served, when we told that he just smiled. Still in general the food was good and tasty.More

Conveniently located in Katong, this was a pleasant omakase experience at this restaurant. Chef paced the food well and engaged us in conversation, but yet not intrusive. Food quality was good and creative. Will very likely return for more

I was expecting another over priced underwhelming dining experience that we have come to expect in many places in Singapore today. However this restaurant is a breath of fresh air. The food is sensational, the service is impeccable and the atmosphere is delightful. The venue...is modern but relaxed with enough flair to create a sophisticated experience without making you feel like dressing up. From a blind menu of 3 price options, comes a selection of the in house chefs creations. In what could be described as a Japanese inspired menu, the dishes are both skill fully presented as well as incredibly designed, created and flavoured. The seafood used is of a very high standard, both fresh and carefully sourced. The meat dishes were flavourful, tender and of a very high standard. And if all this were not enough, the quality and personality of the service is what makes this place stand apart from its competition. If Rakuya can keep this up, it could see itself in a Michelin guide in the future.More
