Ya Kun Kaya Toast is a famous fast food chain in Singapore. The café is small. Staff is quick and efficient. Toasts and coffee are freshly prepared upon ordering, and are very reasonably priced. All toast sets come with a drink and a silky-smooth soft-boiled egg. Highly recommend the crispy Kaya Toast with Butter (SGD 4.80 or USD 3.45 per set; SGD 2.40 or USD 1.72 for a la carte), the soft French Toast with Kaya (SGD 4.50/set; SGD 2.00/a la carte), and the tasty Coffee-C (SGD 2.00 or USD 1.43).

Nestled in a corner of busy bustling CBD. An old school interior and exterior surrounded by modern tall rise buildings. My personal favorite breakfast set is Steamed kaya set. The fluffy white bread with melted butter and sweet thick kaya is a great start to my day. Its not only pretty to look at but very delicious. Love the half boiled egg, always consistently delicious. Teh C peng is always my drink and you have to pay additional for it but all worth it!! They use a mixer to give it that fluffy finish to the milk tea!! Will continue to patronize this outlet as it has a nice outdoor seating area, staff are always very pleasant though its super early in the morning. I went as early as 07:30 and its open!!

I came here for breakfast earlier this month and opted for one of their standard breakfast sets: toast, tea and soft boiled eggs. All pretty much the same as usual. Not too crowded now on weekday mornings in the city area.

From their hey days since Loi Ya Kun makes great coffee and thin toasts at the old Lau Pa Sat till their first opening with long queues, even surpassing the traditional Killiney's Coffee, and spawning a much more successful copy cat of sorts, Toast Box and others. They had come a long way. Now the current generation of owners had converted this tradition Hainanese brand into an International Franchise. Innovated into many weird products from flavoured teas to modern snack pastries, nothing Hainanese about these. To be modernised don't mean you have to lose your roots. And unfortunately however successful you are with Marketing the brand and drawing in tourists as a must try local brand, for a start you lose your local base, and next, tourist whom came to sample its because of precisely your heritage, not your later innovation. I was in need of some pick me up coffee time, and for a Monday, 1950's both outlets were closed, thus I drop by Yakun at China Square after not visiting for years since they became just another tourist hotspot. Pay and pickup your eggs, Coffee, but traditional thin Kaya Butter toasts take awhile. Hmmm. Usually its the other way around at any Coffeeshop. Eggs need time. Not the toasts, thats just a short jiffy to spread 2 slices. Here's the verdict. Eggs were prepared ahead and given out on order. Thus, lets not even talk about the uneven egg sizes. Can you imagine eating cold half boiled eggs? When tge toasts came, they used to be famous for the crunch and the rich kaya. Somehow it had became too sweet like eating sugar with none of the rich coconut aroma. Only last mention is the Coffee, nothing to shout about. Typical kopitiam coffee, not much aroma... Oh well. There's a reason why I haven't frequent Yakun for years. I just got reminded.

Whilst the kopi-o I usually ordered are hot the same cannot be said about their kaya toast. Even though it's lesser customers around they can't seem to serve freshly hot toasted kaya bread. This happened more than once. Its a shame because their original slogan used to be that...

Went to Glenagles hospital for a review and decided to have lunch at Yakun. The portion was way too tiny for $6.50 - consist of one whole chicken wing (small drumlet and wing only) and a small piece of lettuce. No potatoes! Needless to say I was still hungry after eating a chicken curry meal. Curry gravy was below average. Super disappointed with Yakun and vow never to visit Yakun again for lunch!

Went to the Ya Kun in the Fortune Centre Middle Road Singapore for breakfast (easy if you are staying in one of the many hotels on Bencoolen). Chose Kaya Toast Set A ( Kaya Toast, 2 soft boiled eggs & Kopi). Quick service, traditional, eggs come with side of soy sauce & pepper, very affordable (approx SG$6). The "sets" on the menu are easy to understand and order. Lots of locals eating there too.

Famous SG brand, this was the first one to open. Exceedingly busy in the morning and I can see why.   Menu is very easy to understand with sets being the common choice.  Choose the type of 'toast form' you want bread/crackers etc then your drink. Comes with soft boiled eggs. Absolutely delicious.    I always choose original kaya toast set with hot coffee. Sets are around 5-6 dollars depending on what you choose.

Bought a large cup of tea siew tai this morning , ended up with a cup of coffee which I dun drink at all. My knee cap was in pain , couldn’t walk back to Nex for an exchange at yakun. Called up service centre but no one had get back to me till I finished my work at 6.30pm. I went back to them , ask whether can it be refunded, staff by the name of Jo kept asking me who was the one who served me the drink this morning which I didn’t know as no name tag was on the Staff’s shirt. He claimed that I had almost finish the coffee that I took this morning!! Is not the $2.70 that I paid, he didn’t ask for my contact number to update me the feed back I given. I will never step in to yakun anymore no doubt I am a regular in the past. Poor service, at least a feed back from the centre but seems no one cares at all.

Another lunch at Fortune Centre, followed by tea at Ya Kun. There are a few local places for tea in the vicinity, but somehow Ya Kun often has empty tables available. Tea quality is about the same as anywhere else.

This is the place where ya kun started. The service is the best amongst all outlets as they take orders from you when you are seated on your desk, unlike the other outlets where you have to order upfront before carrying your drinks to you seat. Same great taste as any other outlet.

Some branches have good staff, some bad and some really terrible old folks that make even the most patient monks want to curse. So, the reviews can go wide range. I've patronised about 12 branches so far, on regular basis. Good ones are Vivocity, Holland V, Funan, 100am Mall, Thomson Plaza, Paragon, Takashimaya. Other branches have really bossy, grumpy, rude old folks behind the counters. Really unnecessary to ruin a good brand. And makes you wonder why do you spend money to get chilled at and sub-standard cup of drink. Good luck.

I had low expectations, so I was pleasantly surprised at how tasty the peanut butter toast was. We also tried the French toast, and that was good as well. The coffee was ok, and the lady taking orders seemed to bark at everyone. With low prices and authentic atmosphere, it was fun to give this place a try.

Bad service in Marine Parade branch. My 1st visit. Arrived 7:25am for breakfast. Asked them what time is the opening hours. Response were unfriendly tone and said not open yet. I asked again and was ignore. Another staff came and said 7:30am. Had breakfast and ordered 2 takeaway set meals. After the buzzer rang, I went to counter to pickup and nobody was there except the take away bags and a box stating to put your buzzer in it. I took it without checking inside. After reaching home, I found out there was no coffee and tea that I ordered. I called and was told I should have waited as they were still preparing. I told them them they should not have buzzed if it is not ready or someone should have be at the counter to inform the customer. I am very shocked of the very poor service towards its customers despite Ya Kun known foodchain outlet especially in Parkway Parade. Although food was good but likely not to visit Ya Kun Kaya Toast anymore. Better service at the Marine Parade hawker center.

We had to step out from the hotel at 7am (uncommon booking policies of 8 hours), so let’s go for an early breakfast. How can you not try the Singaporean toast? The place is nice, the waiter not that nice, but the toasts remarkable! And the eggs as well. Cannot give 5 stars since the coffee had chocolate inside even if I didn’t ask to. My sleep deprived CB did the right thing by ordering something else.
