Came here by mistake.. was going to go to the restaurant a few doors down. Tried their chicken stew and had rice in the pot at the end. Didn't think it was good.. maybe other restaurants are better?

Dakhanmari is good for dinner, but the waits are usually long and I'm not so sure what the hype is all about, it really is just chicken boiled in water inside a very unhealthy aluminum pot (people who are concerned with ingesting harmful chemicals I don't really recommend this spot..the pot they use are almost similar to using a frying... There was 3 shops side by side. there is always a crowd in the night, so you might have to wait for a short while. They would let you know which shops has spaces and direct you to the shops. It is first served with the plain stock, which the chicken, potatoes and the 떡 (rice cake), it will take... More

Again lured by the all positive review at TA, I decided to try it out although very short of time during my stay. Following the very detailed direction by my one reviewer here I managed to find the correct exit from the metro station which was next to the JW MARRIOTT hotel at Dongdaemen. Go straight forward and then turn... More

My wife and I were introduced to this restaurant last night by a friend and we had such a great time. We aren't novices to Korea, but this was the first time that we've had dakhanmari. Such a delicious meal with a great combination of flavors that you can tailor to your tastes. The ingredients were fresh, flavorful, and the... More

Fresh chicken cooking right before your eyes, compliment with noodles, fried rice & porridge. Great comfort food that let nothing go to waste. Restaurant located in the side-lanes of Shin-Jing Market.

They don't speak English here but some of the staff do speak Chinese well. Just show them how many people on your group and they will arrange for you. You can make your own sauce by customizing based on your own preference, for example less spicy or super spicy. Normally, we take the chicken first only we started to add... More

The walk from Dongdaemun Station Exit 9 was not that far, but made us a bit suspicious as we reached Jong-ro 40-gil. The surroundings were like a wet market. When we reached the restaurant at Jong-ro 40ga-gil (alley), inside the restaurant seems pleasant. The waitress were very accommodating. We ordered the dakhanmari and rice. The chicken was cut in front... More

Staying in Gwanghwamun / Jongno

Neighbourhood Profile
Gwanghwamun / Jongno
If Gwanghwamun is the unofficial living room of Seoul, Jongno is the main hallway connecting some of Seoul’s most important historic sites and neighbourhoods. Being one of Seoul’s oldest neighbourhoods, the area is rich with history and culture in its palaces, shrines, and temples. Stand in the centre of Gwanghwamun Square with Gyeongbokgung Palace and Mt. Bugak in front of you, King Sejong the Great statue behind you, and modern office buildings encircling you—it’s one of the best ways to experience both past and present Seoul in one spot. The main street of Jongno is mostly dotted with restaurants and cafes, but explore deeper within its intricate alleys to pass decades-old restaurants, mom-and-pop shops, and pojangmachas (tents that open at night for quick bites and drinks) and life seems to run just as it did a decade or two ago. Don’t forget to stop at Gwangjang Market, Korea’s oldest traditional market, where it’s just as fun to explore as it is to eat the affordable market dishes that locals have been enjoying since the market first opened in 1905. For a break from urban life, walk along the restored Cheonggyecheon Stream that runs parallel to Jongno for a moment of natural refuge in metropolitan Seoul.
