On a recent trip to Aspen, my wife and I stopped for lunch at Ajax Tavern, even though a lunch we had there last year left a bit to be desired. Our previous visit had been during the 2021 season when things were still a bit unusual due to Covid restrictions, and the restaurant’s outdoor seating was covered in a tent that ruined the vibe and views. This year, however, Ajax Tavern was back to its original form, with its bustling outdoor patio seating right at the base of the mountain – a perfect place to see and be seen for lunch or drinks.
The restaurant takes guests on a first-come, first-served basis for lunch, and when we went on a Friday afternoon, it was busy, but there was no wait for a table. There was a bit of a line to get in because they were a bit slow in checking vaccine cards (which are required by this restaurant to dine).
I was a little surprised at first that they don’t seem to have any heaters by the outdoor tables, but when it was sunny, it seemed to reflect off of the mountain and create more than enough heat even on a relatively cold day. When the sun went behind the clouds, however, it got a bit cold. It’s helpful to dress in layers to eat outside here.
Once we sat down, our server came over quickly to greet us and take our order. She was friendly and attentive. My wife and I each ordered the double cheeseburger with truffle fries, along with a bottle of Veuve Clicquot to split. The sommelier came out quickly with our bottle of champagne, and we had pleasant conversation as he got it opened and poured for us. Soon after, our burgers and fries arrived, and they are nothing fancy, but excellent. This combination – burgers, truffle fries, and champagne, is a must for us when we dine at Ajax Tavern.
The vibe was nice on the afternoon we were there – just lively and fun, with people enjoying lunch and drinks on a sunny day right at the foot of the mountain, many of whom had just come from skiing, and others like us who were just there to spectate. We didn’t feel rushed in any way, so we stayed for a while enjoying our champagne and taking in the view.
I definitely recommend getting lunch at Ajax Tavern on a trip to Aspen. It’s a well-known, classic spot with the best location you could want. I know there’s also an indoor section where they also serve dinner. However, since nothing served here is overly gourmet, and it’s more about the location and ambiance, I think it would fall flat if you couldn’t be outside on the patio. Come for lunch or après, sit outside, and enjoy.

We wondered if we would be able to get a table for lunch after our two long flights during the pandemic. We did. The hostess immediately took us to an outdoor table near the gondola. The setting was perfect. We had a beautiful view of the mountain and the huge pots of flowers.
The tables were placed about six feet apart, servers were wearing masks, and tables and chairs were cleaned after each use.
We had to order the famous truffle fries along with a burrata salad. Both were excellent. Our server told us that the ingredients came from local farms. Everything was so fresh and beautifully presented.
Our server had a great personality and talked with us even though she was very busy. She even recommended other locations to visit during our stay.

We had the chaitini martini and the spiked hot chocolate. We had our drinks right on the mountain and the tent was heated and dolled up a bit with red cloth giving it some elegance. We came only for the drinks and they were very good. The ChaiTini(grey goose, chai syrup, almond milk, and espresso) was strong but tasty!

Came to sunday bluegrass for drinks and food. The bluegrass was amazing, but the service was awful. I met up with a couple friends, the server took over 25 minutes to even greet me. I asked her for water, a Margarita, and some fries to start. My friends ordered more drinks and a bunch of food. Oysters came, and the woman who I am assuming is the manager based on the fact that she was not wearing a nametag or uniform came up to us screaming about how we only reserved for 2 but were now 4 people. We asked for a different table, or other options, and she continued to be a rude screaming b**ch and caused a masssive embarrassing scene. I have never felt so much rude energy before in my life, it was completely uncalled for. She said I was rude and should know better because I work at a restaurant. I'm not sure who she thought I was or what she thought I did, but I don't work at a restaurant and I had been nothing but kind to her server. She ripped my margarita out of my hand, took my food, and demanded that we leave. She wasted food and drinks for no reason at all. She was screaming about how we should know their covid policy. A better form of customer service would be to inform rather than scream. I will never go back. I believe her name was Jacky or Jackaline, she should be fired.

Our waiter, Raymond, was excellent and our service was wonderful. The food was pretty good. Steak sandwich was $35 with and extra $9 for truffle fries. Drink menu was really good. We enjoyed our dinner. We had the only reservation available for 2 hours, but the restaurant was about 25% full. That could have been a staffing ratio. Worth a visit! Convenient at the bottom of the gondola.

Tried the Coffee Molasses BBQ Wagyu Brisket here. As expected, the Wagyu melts in your mouth and the accompanying biscuits were also phenomenal. I'd definitely recommendation for lunch. The Wagyu burger is also pretty good.

Cool little spot to have lunch right on the mountain, and in town. Highly recommend the onion soup, and the tomato soup with grilled cheese is excellent as well. Great drinks and vibe.

Hi Jacqui Dibello . Sadly we missed out on coming back to Aspen with the closures. It would have been great to come back. We are trying to replicate that bean dip you have with the baguette at the start of meals. Is there anywhere we can get the recipe?
It’s amazing !!

Our family visited Ajax Tavern the Tuesday after Christmas for dinner. We had made a reservation on Resy a few weeks earlier, and were seated immediately upon arrival. The service was friendly and prompt, and our food was delicious. Our kids were all able to find something they loved on the menu, and I am still dreaming about the burger and truffle fries. (I even took the leftover fries home and put them in a skillet scramble with eggs and bacon the next morning! So good!) We can't wait to visit again when we are in the area. I would love to go for lunch when you can see the skiers coming down.

Great lunch with a great view. After skiing ajax all morning, sitting on the terrace with clear skies and a hearty meal is good way to start your afternoon. The waitstaff are generally pleasant though very busy. When seated we were told 60min limit, they try to turn the tables quickly. The food was very good, french onion soup, steak sandwich, salad, were all very tasty. The cocktails and wine selection are good and the service is fine…a little distracted because of so much going on but not negligent. When done with lunch, it’s a ten step walk to the Gondola.

Ha! Always a good choice if you have the budget. Service on the deck is good and interactive, food is variable (still the best truffle fries), and cost is very "aspen-Like." Views/Venue is great. Re-enact the Trump slapping on the northeast edge of the deck when wife#1 found out he brought his mistress to Aspen with the entourage!

This restaurant is much better that the last time we came years ago. In fact we are here twice this week. The trout, bouillabaisse, meats and yes truffle fries were very good. Also, the prices are relatively reasonable and one can get a reservation for dinner!

The view and food spectacular. The service horrible. Our waiter could not have been more annoyed to wait on us. Terrible attitude, rarely visited table. For the prices and quality of food, which is amazing, you would think they would strive for service to match. Other wait staff around us seemed engaging and attentive perhaps it was just an issue with this gentleman. Also sunglasses left on your hat, classless at this type of establishment for a server, especially left on well after dark. Would have been 5 stars. Consider other options in Aspen.

My daughter and I arrived for the music festival. We wanted a nice dinner to celebrate our arrival. The staff was great. The food was delicious. However, we had ordered the Friday special Schnitzel with Sauce Robert. Upon receiving our dish, we began to eat. We realized that the kitchen had forgotten the Sauce Robert! When the wait staff arrived to check on us, we had eaten half our meal (not wanting to dine on cold veal). Although the staff apologized, nothing was done to remedy the situation. We, however, did recommend to my daughter's colleague. That were seated and then were ignored for 20 min. So they left. Restaurants should never judge diners by itisir appearance. You never know when a critic is sitting at a table even if on vacation.

We are locals and went for a late lunch, always sit at the bar and this is (was) my go to for French Onion soup. Well this visit was very disappointing! The soup definitely was lacking in every aspect, no depth of flavors and the burger was okay, normally the fries are spectacular but seamed to be the left over of the batch. Service was good; just don’t know if I’d chance it again for the price! Scratch that off local spot.
