We visited the Tombs, this trip 41 years after graduation from Georgetown. A little expanded, but still the same ambiance. We had a traditional pitcher of beer and a hamburger - both delicious. Our waitress had been there only 2 years, so when we asked...More

Family, single, college kid, date, office party... this place can handle it. Good drink selection. Plenty of seating. Great menu. Just a great place where you can get a good meal and have a good time regardless of situation.

Closest restaurant to the Georgetown University hotel. Ate there twice. Had to wait for a table both times, but the food and service was great and worth it. Kind of loud, but not unpleasant. Definitely worth doing.

I was with my kids in Georgetown for the day and looking forward to lunch in place that matches the unique charm of this beautiful part of the city. What I think was a nice characteristic atmosphere was not to be experienced by us because...More

We came here for lunch after a tour of nearby Georgetown University. They were having a special that day - 1/2 price hamburgers with a purchase of a beverage. We were surprised by how quickly the food came out and it was very good.

Stopped in for dinner. Cool atmosphere, sort of a basement bar feeling. It was pretty loud, but good energy level. Food was okay. A little generic pub food... had the chicken sandwich, squash soup and pizza For dessert we had the cheesecake and the cast...More

While staying in DC for a few days, my son and I went to the Tombs for a light dinner. Place was very hip. Service was good, food was excellent and the atmosphere full of groups of people having a blast. My son had the...More

I have been going to the Tombs since 1970 and I just visited again yesterday. The bar and the main dining area have little changed since my first days here. Since it is located on the edge of Georgetown University's campus, it is filled with...More

I had eaten at the Tombs dozens (hundreds?) of times in the 1990s but had not visited in several years. My recent brunch reminded me of how well this place consistently turns out good food, well served, at a reasonable price point (by Georgetown standards)....More

Description
Situated on the edge of Georgetown University's campus, The Tombs is a neighborhood restaurant by day and a popular gathering place for Georgetown students by night. Along with 1789 and F. Scott's, The Tombs rounds out a trio of restaurants built in a Federal-style townhouse dating from the mid-1800s. When Georgetown alumnus Richard McCooey founded The Tombs in 1962, he named it after a mention in T.S. Eliot's poem "Bustopher Jones: The Cat About Town." Whether its students watching a Hoya basketball game, Georgetown alumni sharing a pitcher of lager or neighbors enjoying Sunday brunch after visiting Holy Trinity Church, The Tombs traditions run deep.
