1789 is a true five star restaurant - I used this headline to emphasize how disappointed I was their apple dessert is now a new wave, foo foo thing unworthy of the restaurant. Other than that a great meal with even better service. I was...More

Great atmosphere in a pleasant historic building. I have never had a better pasta in the us (I am a true Italian) and the duck was phenomenal! Well done!

Very nice place, charming, not many tables, elegant decoration, service to the details. Octupus with porkbelly is a must! The duck has a great flavor! Very good list of wines by glass.

Made reservations for this highly coveted restaurant. Looked forward to a wonderful experience but we were disappointed. We asked our server what he would recommend and he stated that the rack of lamb was a long standing favorite. We went with his recommendation. Our dinners...More

The restaurant has a charming setting, but the food and service were hit and miss throughout the night. It is the first time we ordered the tasting menu and ala carte menu. The timing of the meal was off and my wife felt rushed with...More

The food was wonderful and the service was superb. Highly recommended. Two people at our table had fish and loved it. I had the vegetarian squash dish and loved it.

The ‘89 is a D.C. institution. And for good reason. After a few weird turns, it has returned to its roots. It is based on a wonderful, and occasionally somewhat “gamey” menu (venison anyone?) that ties the 18th and 21st centuries together. I had a...More

From salads to solid mains, very American and somewhat eclectic menu with basics like ny strip steak done perfectly thrown in. Great wine selection including viognier from VA ..... get it. Service was perfect (thanks!)

My wife and I had dinner at 1789 last night, returning to the scene of the rehearsal dinner before our wedding 47 years ago. Over the decades, we have returned to 1789 from time to time when we have been in DC. It has had...More

The food was fantastic but the portions were quite small for the price being paid. We didn't realize the dress attire was "jacket preferred" until after we arrived and felt a bit under-dressed. I would recommend this for the couple or businessmen that want privacy...More

Dinner will be off the charts. Don't be afraid to sit in the smaller dining room near the bar. A lovely, intimate space you will most certainly enjoy. Foggy Bottom subway station is close. Check out how to access Kennedy... More

I had no jacket, but most men did. And, the restaurant was a bit cold. I must add that the food was really mediocre, so I would recommend against going, no matter how you're dressed.
