Sunday evening staff cleaning up around us while we were trying to eat dinner. Dinner was cold nachos made with “cheese wiz” and salad with dried up chicken breast. Bartenders were engaging with good stories.

We ordered the salmon and seafood pasta. Simple delicious. J Paul’s has a great wine list and good selection of beer. The staff service is satisfactory. Just average. Told the server it was our first visit no great response. I’ll come back for the food.

Here's a list of problems befalling J. Paul's. First, my guests and I could barely fit in the booths; so tight they were, even though the three of us are physically thin. Second, during lunch we had 4 or 5 different servers, all of whom...More

After finding our own place to sit perhaps two feet from the bar I had to get up and practically make our drinks to get someone to take an order. Never approached by any of the staff so we didn't stick around for anything more...More

We were walking along M Street looking for a place to eat. The menu hanging outside the front door looked good and we decided to eat here. The restaurant has a pub feel to it. We asked to be seated in the elevated back section...More

Terribly slow service. Crabcakes were awful, with a sawdust texture. They also have no idea how to accommodate customers with allergies, although they will tell you they do, which is very dangerous. So many other restaurants in Georgetown, don't bother with this one.

We ate at J Paul's on Saturday night. It was a good pick for us with our two kids. Our server was incredibly accommodating and our food was excellent. We noted that it looks like a lot of stores and restaurants have closed along the...More

It was freezing with slight rain outside so honestly my friend and I didn't want to hunt for a higher-rated restaurant on Yelp. Prices aren't shy although portions are fairly generous. Marketed as "Georgetown's Iconic Neighborhood Saloon," this place is quite old and seems a...More

Had lunch. Reasonably good service nicely cooked food good sized portions. We had Al Capon brisket with mozzarella, fish and chips, and jerk chicken sandwich. They were very well seasoned. Good selection of beer and atmospheric in the old bar area.

This is usually a go-to place for quick seating and decent food. The brisket sliders (app) were amazing, and the fish and chips was a huge portion for the $17 price. You even get a warm soft pretzel as a welcome app!

Description
J. Paul’s is Washington’s quintessential turn of the century American Dining Saloon. The J. Paul’s bar in Georgetown is itself a 100 year old mahogany shotgun bar, built by the Brunswick Balke Coolander Company and was previously housed in a grand saloon in the Chicago stockyards. Many will swear over their scotch that Al Capone himself bellied up to that very bar. Antique brass elevator doors from New York’s Waldorf Astoria frame the back dining room.

A few short blocks from the Potomac River, in the heart of fashionable Georgetown, the original J. Paul’s has become an institution. Every day, politicians, journalists, artists, business people and Washington personalities share tables with students, tourists and ex-Pats in the nation’s capital. Don't miss out on a visit to this DC institution!
