We dined here because it got a great review in the Washington Post, the local paper. The food was very good, but nothing so outstanding that we are eager to return. What really turned us off, however, was that the waiter when he brought the bill said that the 20% added automatically to the bill did not cover his services. We always tip very generously, but this was just rude, and the suggestion was that we should have to pay 35-40% of the bill for service, which was off-putting. DC has recently passed a law so that all waitpeople must be paid minimum wage, so the older argument still holds. I realize we are all navigating this new world of service charges added to bills and then the question of tipping and what the service charge goes to—-but this was too much. Rude and presumptuous, and it reflects poor leadership and messaging by the management. We won’t be going back.

We dined here twice and will gladly return if ever in DC again. Meal was excellent, we particularly enjoyed the pear and radicchio salad. Two choices of Pinot Grigio both great value. Front patio had excellent shade coverage and hedge to shelter from traffic. Service was mixed; some staff were friendly and efficient. But the hostess was clearly irritated that we arrived while she was watching videos on her cell phone; she looked up from the video she was watching on her cell phone then promptly went back to it (a server stepped in to greet us). Also, one of our servers asked us to give her an extra tip because of the 20% mandatory service fee she only gets 4%. The 20% mandatory fee is unusual to begin with (we were not part of a group) but the server was not particularly efficient and we thought it rather bold of her. The meal was good value for quality of food.

After attending the lighting of the national Christmas Tree my wife and I walked a few blocks and dropping in for dinner. We both love Italian food but had never dined at Il Piatto. First I must state that our server Sam was outstanding very personable and extremely knowledgeable. It is a lovely environment with a nice layout. We started by sharing the arancini, my wife had the tasty spinach ravioli and I greatly enjoyed the tortellini daily special. We shared a very good sorbetto and I lovingly had a nicely chilled limoncello. The bread was good and the olive oil had a wonderful taste. It made for a very good overall dining experience. Thank you Sam!

Absolutely worst service I think I've ever had for any restaurant, especially an upscale one. Seven of us stopped in for lunch after touring the Monuments. After waiting quite a while and having not been acknowledged by a server, we were about to leave when she finally came to our table. There was only one other table of two in the restaurant. She brought water and bread, so we decided to stay. She then proceeded to have a long conversation with a co-worker so eventually I went and told her we were ready to order. When the food came out, it was small portions of mediocre food. After we finished we literally had to ask her to remove some of the plates, but she only took the specific ones we handed her. It was actually quite strange. She would take one plate and walk off while other empty plates sat there. Be advised, they add a 20% service charge so the tip is included. We typically tip that amount or more for great service, but this server didn't deserve anywhere near that. I suspect service suffers due to the service charge being added. I would give zero stars if I could. Definitely don't recommend.

If you're looking for a delicious Italian meal in DC, Il Piatto is the place to go. The fettuccine con salsiccia and the pollo Milanese were delicious. The waitstaff were very attentive and nice. The ambiance is elegant. Table seating is a little close, so ask for a booth. Street parking may be difficult, so best to uber or walk to this restaurant. Be aware that a 20% charge for service is automatically applied to your bill.

We visited the restaurant spontaneously and had a variety of very tasty pasta dishes. The Californian Sauvignon Blanc was also delicious. The staff were very accommodating. It is particularly worth mentioning that the Pellegrino was not charged extra. Very large wine list.

Visited this restaurant with my wife on a Sunday evening during our stay in DC. We were shown to our table where a waiter with zero personality “took care of us”. We asked for two glasses of Pinot noir at $11.5 each. The waiter poured about 100ml or less, certainly not a measured amount anyway. We were also given two slices of crusty bread without butter. We opted for linguine with a tomato sauce at $18.95 each and added meat balls for an extra $5 per head. When it came each consisted of about two serving spoons of pasta with two small meatballs with a rather odd consistency and taste. We didn’t feel welcome so we didn’t stay too long. The whole meal took about 45 minutes. Avoid.

We came into a busy restaurant and were able to get seated at the last outdoor table (right beside the servers stand). We waited for quite sometime before our server (Assietou, according to our slip) who was standing right beside us made her way to our table. We ordered drinks and the meatball appetizer. When the meatballs came there were just two. Not only “just two” but the smallest meatballs I have ever seen besides Chef Boyardee, and they were about a bite and a half each. We finally got asked if we wanted to order and we placed our order. I also asked for a refill on my beverage since it was on the edge of my table and was still empty ( keeping in mind our server is right beside us). The kitchen brings our meal and takes the plate of remaining sauce from the meatballs without asking. I had purposely kept this in the middle of the table and my glass was still empty on the edge. A manger went by and I asked him if I could get another drink and he took my glass. Our meals came and I was still waiting for a drink part way through. I finally got another drink and we had to wait to pay the bill. Needless to say we won’t eat here again and plenty of places still have good service that would love our patronage. Hope she wasn’t shocked by the lack of tip. Don’t go here.

Have you heard anyone paying a tip 6 times more than the amount you are supposed to pay? On 9th of October we went to this restaurant after a meeting. I came from italy and it was my first time in USA and it was the first restaurant i have been. We were six people and only had an aperativo, mainly drinks only and the bill was 250 dollars. We wanted to split the bill between 6 people. Everyone paid their share,me too. When i returned back to italy i saw that 250 usd was charged from my credit card rather than 40 usd. I contacted the manager via a friend in DC(they did not respond my message from direct contact) I explained that there must be smt wrong. I was sure that it is a mistake. They said they thought i wanted to pay a tip 210 usd on top of my share of 40 usd. I said i am not familiar with the system in usa and it was not my intention to pay 210 as tip and i asked for a refund of 200 usd. But they did not refund my money back. This is unacceptable! I havent had such a bad experience in my life.

The place was quite nice, even though a bit outdated. The ravioli we ordered was perfectly done. However, the gnocchi dish was too “mushy”. Both dishes tasted good though. We had to ask twice for a simple basket of bread before we were attended to. Catching anyone’s attention was really challenging which affected the whole dining experience. Happy we got to the place without reservation, but we would not come back again.

Some of the reviews are mixed, but I had a very good experience. Attended with a small group from work (6 ppl) and we had a great overall meal and dining experience. It IS a little pricey, but I thought the quality of food was excellent. Service was attentive, selections of appetizers and entrees was good, and atmosphere of the restaurant was good. My entree was perfectly right-sized - not too much, not too little.

In town for the weekend, first time I’d DC. Dinner here was fantastic! Service was spot on. Had the fried risotto balls for appetizer. Lamb chops for dinner, tiramisu for dessert. Along with a couple old fashions. Good to go!

I know the reviews are mixed on this site - but I had a very enjoyable experience. Great drinks, great selection on the menu, great quality of food, and fantastic service. Yes it's a little expensive - but I thought it wasn't as bad as some places in DC certainly are. I will definitely return, it was worth it!

This place used to be my twice a week happy hour but the new bar team is a mess. Miss the old team. The staff used to be top notch. Now they are neglectful, cliquey, and unprofessional. Not a place you want to unwind after work. Hopefully they can find a good team again.

Tourist trap. Buratta nearly frozen. Calamari smelled fishy. Stale bread. Overcooked pasta. Plus side: Professional, friendly servic, great location on BLM Plaza near White House. But we live in DC. So nothing to write home about.
