About
Costes Downtown is located in the heart of Budapest at the ground level of the elegant Prestige Hotel. In 2016, less than a year after opening, the restaurant was awarded a Michelin star. Our restaurant offers a friendly atmosphere, where we value and respect the environment, whilst offering unpretentious Michelin star gastronomy based on good techniques and fine ingredients. Our executive chef, Márk Molnár, has worked in some of the best-known restaurants over the last couple of decades acquiring “world- around” experience in multi-continental cultures.

We decided to booking a special meal at this restaurant as we were in Budapest as part of our honeymoon. The business lunch offered us a chance to experience Michelin star food at a reasonable price. We had a lovely table in the window, as I had asked for. The décor was modern but had some interesting features like the living wall. The staff were friendly although we did have to ask a couple of times for our drinks. We had some wafer thin bread with paprika, charcoal and plain flavours on the table to start with a yoghurt dip while we were looking at the menu. After we had ordered, a warm sack of bread rolls was brought to the table with duck/goose fat shredded butter and a wild garlic flavoured one. There was sweet little wooden paddles to put them into the bread which stayed warm thanks to the heated sack! I had the trout starter and my husband had the belly pork. Both were beautifully presented and had some many different textures and flavours. For mains my husband had the beef cheek and I had the sea bream, once again, so many different flavours and delicate presentation. The desserts were a work of art, particularly mine which was rhubarb, rosemary and ginger. My husbands looked simple but had some truly wonderful flavours. When they cleared our dessert dishes away we were presented with a lovely surprise, a plate with congratulations in piped chocolate and some little jellies and sweet treats. Overall a lovely dining experience.

So 2 Vegetarians (one no spice) 4 meat eaters (2 no Beef) That's a challenge! Handled it beautifully. Kitchen Tour, Fizz in the wine cellar, Somiller was as knowledgeable about the 'new' Hungarian wines and paired them beautifully with our Tasting menu. Its not Cheap but definitely a Must

We had been here before 2 years ago and it wasn’t as good as we had expected. Decided to give them another go in September and booked for lunch. We chose 4 courses at HUF12.5k per person. Seems like they have improved quite dramatically from our last visit and we enjoyed all 8 of our dishes. Can’t remember the dishes we had and the menu has been changed already it seems. I would recommend going for lunch as the dinner prices are so much more for essentially the same food.

The place is really overrated. We dropped by on our first night in Budapest and there were no tables available, although the place looked empty. So we made a reservation for another night and when we came the night of our reservation we were given a standard table instead of a nice booth, although the booth remained empty throughout our dinner. The food is minimalistic and the waiting times are way too long in between courses. Overall dinner took us almost 3 hours. Also really expensive in the end. The staff is really diligent though and they try to do their best and the premises are nice. I don't think I would return and I don’t recommend.

My husband and I are from the US and spent 2 weeks traveling in Europe. We stayed at the Prestige hotel so Booking a dinner here was a no brainer. This isn’t our first Michelin star meal but our first one in Budapest. After a little over 4 hours, we left feeling disappointed. The food was good, the chef is indeed talented. The staff was polite. We paired our dishes with local wines and enjoyed the selection. What ruined the experience for us was how unorganized it all was. What a mess!! Tables around us also seemed to be having the same issues as their service was also all over the place. One of the tables next to us paired their meals with cocktails and at one point they had 2-3 cocktails each sitting there. The bartender /waiter should have timed this better. The staff could do a much better job communicating with each other and could use a little more training. Everyone did their own thing. Wines weren’t served with the dishes, we were often done with the wine before the dish would even arrive, and we really did try to go very slowly…!!!! At times we didn’t even know what was supposed to be paired with what to be honest. Usually it’s explained to us , why a certain wine is chosen and what it brings out in the dish, etc etc… it’s all part of the fun for us! Sometimes the plates would show up 10 min apart and sometimes 30+ min. It was all over the place. To us, the Michelin star experience is just as important as the meals and that is why we give it a 3 star. Anyways, this experience left us a little confused. We spent about $400 less than our average US Michelin star meal and it was not worth it. It was meh. It’s a shame for the chef because we really did enjoy everything he made which can’t always be said for other Michelin meals we’ve had. I don’t even like leaving this review but the issues we had are something that can be fixed. The food is great and staff nice so hopefully it’s helpful. Wishing Costes all the best!

Dear Tati12384, First and foremost, I would like to thank you for taking the time to write a review on TripAdvisor and sharing your Costes Downtown dining experience with us. Naturally, our guests’ feedback is of utmost importance to us, as we use these reviews as a measuring tool, a platform to build from reviewing our service flows and training needs which you clearly highlighted amongst your comments. I am sure you gave us a genuine review, pointing out the best and the worst for which I am extremely grateful and take as an opportunity for improvement. Rest assured, I will pass on your compliments on the food to our chef and address areas of concern with the restaurant manager and service team to rectify communication and service flaw/timing. Although excuses will never make up for shortfalls, I would like to let you know that your feedback is a confirmation that we have plenty of work to do as we strive to re-build a team dissipated by the fact that we were closed for long periods of time due to the pandemic disease, nevertheless, we remain fully committed to providing flawless attentive service. I understand you are disappointed as I would be, however, if you happen to visit Budapest again, please contact me directly as I would like to convey my sincere apologies and make up for your discontentment. Thank you for your patronage and feel free to contact us directly on reservations@costesdowntown.hu. With my best regards, Ms Andrea Marton PR&Marketing Manager

I will never come here again. I cannot under any circumstances imagine it worthwhile to dine here. Best things first. The quality of the food was OK. In the low end for a Michelin*. The first experience is the chef not being happy with his choice of raw material – so you are asked to upgrade your beef file from a Hungarian to – an Uruguayan cut (extra price: 25€ for the 40 g. – it is what it is) (and talking about the menu – one dish is bread with butter; well tasting smoked butter). The acoustics of the room is so poor that in combination with the indifferent attitude of the waiters – we could not hear the introduction of the meals. We resigned after a few times asking for repetition. We constantly ran out of water – all 6 of us and not just for a minute or 10. When calling the waiter walking next to us, we were ignored. My wife prefers a dry white wine, so she had a bottle of white instead of the tasting menu. She got the biggest of all the wine gasses – and it was constantly overfilled; regardless of the attempts to have smaller fillings. Warm white is not nice. We had the international wine tasting menu. All small glasses. All underfilled. No extras. No……….. The total performance is the mid layer of a middle-class restaurant. Budapest is full of nice and high quality places. Try something else.

The food was quite nice and interesting, an innovative mix of flavors and with great wine pairing. Only issue with the food was that the dishes are studied to be meat based - one of us asked a vegetarian menu and they swapped all meat with fish, but this did not really work for some of the dishes. Further, the service was really lackluster (x2 waiters kept inventing excuses for some evident mistakes as bringing the dish and explaining it while a guest was at the restroom) and the price way too expensive (450€ for x2 aperitif and x2 menu with wine pairing - very pretentious considering this is a bistro and we spent less in Michelin starred restaurants)

Had reserved a dinner, early in advance, to celebrate our anniversary on 27 December. The place was noisy, as two small kids from another group were crying all the time so we couldn't enjoy our dinner. We chose a bottle of wine from the wine list, but the sommelier told us that she had seen the last bottle of the particular wine to be served an hour ago. She suggested another bottle without saying that the price was three times the one we had chosen. She served us in the beginning, then she left the bottle on a table without temperature control and disappeared, We were not served again and we asked from a waiter to bring the bottle to our table to serve ourselves. Usually, in restaurants of this level with a degustation menu, there is one waiter who serves following the row of dishes. in our case, there were three different waiters coming and serving from time to time, with different levels of English, so the description of the dishes was hard to understand. The food was quite good. As we finally paid about 500 euros (including the down payment at the time of the reservation) we definitely didn't get such a value. All in all, it was not an expected experience.

Dear aris_kats, Please allow me to thank you for having chosen our restaurant and for your time to give us feedback via TA: Having carefully read your review, I would like to thank you for your positive feedback regarding the quality of our food, would ask for your understanding regarding the children as these aspects are beyond our reach and would mostly like to apologize for the poor quality of service. As you correctly mention, this is not the way we should have handled the situation and yes we should have offered you a similar yet alternative wine at an equal price, otherwise advised you as we should have kept the wine temperature under control as well as serving it. I would only you to know that I am extremely disappointed with out performance and would kindly ask you to give us a second opportunity because without pretension, this is not the level of service we normally provide to our guests. If you do visit us again, please contact our reservations team and ask for MM

I am not someone frequents places like this often, and so my experience in such a place is limited. However, I can say that was the most delicious experience I have had to date. And I say experience deliberately as every dish was more than just one of the days meals and felt like the chef was trying to excite every sense they could. The waiter (Rudolf) was very knowledgeable about every single one of the dishes and was more than happy to answer any questions about the food. The sommelier was just as knowledgeable about the wine and again helped us to pick the wine to suit us. This was made to be a very special evening and would say it was worth every penny.

From the moment you enter you know you’re in for a treat! This meal made memories we will have forever. Starting with complimentary “Oreos” (Olive Tapenade & Cream Cheese) and “Peas” - photos attached. Followed by Fresh Bread & Fresh Churned Butter. We opted for 4 out of the 6 courses on offer with the tasting menu. 1st course was Cauliflower cooked and served in many different ways. (Hating cauliflower I thought this was not for me) … however …. WOW! 2nd Course we chose Beef Fillet & Beef Cheek. Again outstanding. Tastes were amazing. 3rd Course was “Lemon” lemon Sorbet & Lemon Cream served in a whole Lemon. Again beautiful, sharp but not too overpowering. 4th & Final course was “Paprika” a homage to Hungary. This was a piece of art! Rich Chocolate mousse served as a chilli pepper with edible leaves made from (I think) sorbet. It was a true experience and will return again and again! Thank you for such a wonderful evening.

6 dishes and bubbles to start. We get fish for an appetizer, my wife's fish was raw and could not be eaten, they acknowledged it, and just said sorry. The waiters were never at the table, if you needed anything, you had to call on them. Would never recommend the restaurant. Bjarne A

This is likely the best restaurant in Budapest. We had the Chefs Table, a delightful and incredibly delicious and insightful way to experience the excellent care and imaginative presentation of the food preparation here. It’s like going to an art museum vs a souvenir shop...impeccable service, quality, and value.

Only regret is we didn’t order more courses, or understandably, they can’t flip their menu enough - I’d have liked to have gone back twice over a five day visit, even with the price tag, but obviously not for the same courses. So many highly rated restaurants, this has to be a list topper. Some dishes defy chemistry & what is achievable gastronomically, on a plate. Genius, unconventional cocktail pairing, a fun way to round out the dishes, so pleased I chose in preference to wine. Slightly unnerving balance of male management to blonde female waiters though, a bit avatar ! Relieved to have been hidden up in booth in my Birkenstocks, didn’t mind not aligning with their window dressing, gave me an opportunity to lick the plate in private ;0P

Excellent experience. Pleasing ambiance. Music appropriately muted. Service impeccable and most importantly food preparation and presentation was creative, interesting and delicious with the exception of the main course (among 11 course tasting menu). We did not opt for the up charge of $50 for waygu beef and what was served, identified as ribeye, was tough and chewy. Total cost was high - $500 for 2 - including two glasses of champagne and glasses of wine, but not wine pairing, and including service charge, but no regrets

Mixed experience. Because we were having a family celebration of our son's 40th birthday, we opted for the tasting menu without being paired to wines. We did though drink some wine. The waiters were attentive and the food looked prettily presented but it wasn't nearly as special as we had hoped (given how much we were charged and that this is apparently a Michelin restaurant). We complained that there were constantly hovering fruit flies which even landed on the butter. The waiters apologized more than once and then offered us a table closer to the hotel bar whilst telling us that the fruit flies were even worse there (!) so naturally we didn't take them up on this unsatisfactory change of table. We felt at the very least they should have removed the service charge from the bill.
