The restaurant lives up to our expectation for coming up with some really good wines for tasting with the menu. The ingredients of the food courses were top-notch (as one of us used to work in the meat industry), but it was the organic Hungarian wines that showcased the brilliance. Nice work! It was a chilly Monday night we went to, but so many locals turned up that we witnessed at least two tables doing three rounds of customers - not a bad feat at all!

The staff here are friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and rightly proud of the great food and wines they are serving. Thanks for a lovely lunch and generous wine advice/ tasting. We enjoyed the 5 course tasting menu, particularly the local pork belly in a tasty jus with yuzu and the veal which melted in your mouth. Yummy! We will definitely return and advise others to give it a try....

Borkonyha has been my favourite restaurant in Budapest since my first visit in 2015. Each visit to the city (3-4 times a year) my wife and I make sure to dine here. Covid meant it was closed for a long time and it recently reopened, it was with great trepidation that we returned for dinner. We feared the kitchen staff may have changed and standards would have dropped. To our relief, this wasn’t the case and the food was as good and consistent as ever. I chatted to the maitre’d and he said the kitchen staff was the same although some front office staff had changed. Service was unaffected. My one (consistent) gripe is the time it takes between dishes, it can be quite extended. If you can look past this then you will have a faultless dinning experience.
On to the food, we are pescatarians so always do ala carte, started with pike perch and a goat cheese salad, the former very good the latter ok. For mains we had the fresh fish and pearl barley risotto, both very good. Dessert was green apple and chocolate porcini dishes, both again very good. Overall the food was of a very high standard apart from the salad which was just ok.
Borkonyha continues to be my favourite restaurant in Budapest, a city that now boasts 7 Michelin starred restaurants. The food is of a very high standard and extremely reasonable, we paid EUR150 for a three course meal for 2 washed down with a bottle of Bollinger brut special cuvée.

As we arrived at Borkonyha, expecting a relaxing and calm environment, we first noticed instead that the restaurant was quite busy and loud. We wouldn’t be able to hold a private conversation inside so we were lucky to get a table outside. The service was OK but not particularly attentive, as we had to top up our own waters and wines at times. Not the service one would expect from a star restaurant.
As for the food, it was boring and forgetful. We had the artichoke soup which was simply a broth from only artichokes. It was OK but nothing special. The ravioli in there barely contained any stuffing so the experience was like chewing cooked dough. We also had the pigeon with truffles. Again, nothing memorable and the “truffles” were incorporated into a sauce without any particularly strong truffle flavor. Without getting into too much detail, the main dishes were similarly unimpressive. We skipped desert after that. I’ve had much better food from cheaper, nicer, and more relaxed places that didn’t have a star. Not worth your time nor money.

We were so excited to try a Michelin starred restaurant. But to be honest it just wasn’t special.
We were met a quickly shown to our table. The service was alright but slow and bot as attentive as we expected. We waited for over 20 minutes for our first drink to arrive and the food was equally slow.
The food was interesting but really wasn’t that special. We had a soup to start that was really good followed by a venison and a beef dish. The beef was dry and chewy and had 2 miniature potatoes and some very sour cabbage to go with. A very small amount of sauce was also poured on it. I did raise the issues and a discount was given.
I like to think I’ve tried some amazing restaurants and experienced some good service. But this was justa average.
My biggest disappointment came when I learnt that the stag see none of the service charge that is automatically added to the bill. This frankly disgusts me.
Would I visit again…sadly not. If I am honest it just wasn’t of the standard I expected of a place given a Michelin star. I do however understand that they have not been open long since the lockdowns. I genuinely hope this is the issue.

Attended this restaurant in February 2022 for dinner. The service on arrival was poor, greeted by a waiter with the restaurant phone to his ear speaking to someone and was told to take our table in the direction he was waving. Our coats were eventually taken and hung up by the door.
We ordered a couple courses each and a bottle of wine. Prices were on the high end of what Budapest offers but this was expected by a restaurant with a Michelin rating. Food was sub-par. Not particularly tasteful or memorable, certainly not tasty enough to warrant the price point.
The restaurant was very loud and the table were very very close together. For somewhere of this calibre I expect to be able to get into my seat without having to practically go buttocks to face to the poor table next to us. It felt like they were trying to maximise the number of tables they could get in at the cost of a good dining experience.
We settled up and went to leave. No one bought our coats back to us which were buried under a stack of other coats on the hook by the door. Will not return and wouldn't recommend.

We had the 5-courses menu including the wine pairing which was very good. However, the restaurant was very noisy and the waiters were very, very busy the first hour of our visit. Having said that the waiter being responsible for our table found the time for presenting the food and the wine in a less stressful manner.

We opted for the five course degustation at Borkonyha and did not regret this. Each dish was served to perfection and was an absolute pleasure to eat. The service was to a high standard and we enjoyed the intimate vibe the relatively small size of the restaurant offered. The restaurant's wine list was also clearly extensive and the staff did a great job at guiding us towards a wine which we loved after we gave him a briefing about the kind of wine we wanted to drink.

The food was really delicious, and the waiter recommended a lovely local wine to accompany our meal. However, the service was a little slow and there were a couple of large noisy groups which slightly dampened our experience. I think with it being a Michelin star restaurant we had certain expectations, and whilst it was a lovely meal, it didn’t live up to the standard we have experienced at other Michelin star venues. But they catered well for my dietary requirements and we did enjoy our meal.

We had the 5 courses degustation menu and the wine pairing which tasted very well. Unfortunately the noise level in the restaurant was very high, which ruined the experience a lot. We couldn't hear the waiters food presentation when the courses was served, and we were unable to have a conversasion because we were sitting near two dinner parties, which were very loud and sometimes knocked on the table. The waiters didn't tell the two dinner parties to keep there voices down. There we didn't get the full food experience because we were unable to hear what we ate and unble to talk to eachother.

A very good experience, with minor setbacks. The food was delicious and the wine pairing was excellent.
We had the tasting meny, unfortunately we could not read the meny anywhere, and the (nice and friendly) waiter had some difficulties explaining what we had.
He was however a great sommelier and could tell a lot about the wine.
The acoustics in the restaurant was very poor, it was difficult to hear our selves.
All in all a great dinner experience - but for a Michelin star, one could hope that the last details were better.

Returned to Borkonyha after 6 years at lunch with my wife and 9 month old baby girl. I went for the sturgeon appetiser, which I whole heartedly recommend. The finesse and technique required to pull of such a wonderful dish is mind boggling. After that, my wife chose the mushroom consommé, which resembled a cappuccino whilst I chose the traditional bean soup - both tremendously delicious. After that I chose the saddle venison, my wife for the mangalica (pork) chuck. 10/10. For desert, I showed our waiter, who, by the way, did a tremendous job, a picture of a desert we had 6 years ago and asked him if he could replicate that - I normally wouldn't do that but it had great significance for me and my wife. He fixed us up with a desert normally served at the tasting menu which was very, very close to what we remembered from years ago.
They even went so far to cook something for our baby girl.
I am truly sorry I can't give 6/5 but Borkonyha would truly deserve it.

The food was amazing and the staff extremely polite about talking us through the menu, juice pairings, etc. My friend and I enjoyed both the vegetarian and classic tasting menus in equal measure. Highly recommend

We loved this restaurant, which is nicely relaxed for a Michelin star restaurant (rather than very formal). We enjoyed the 5 course tasting menu with paired wines and the food, the service and the whole experience were wonderful. A highlight - amongst many highlights - of our time in Budapest.

My boyfriend and I ate here on the first night of our trip to Budapest. We stumbled across the restaurant whilst searching for wine bars and booked a couple of days before. From start to finish the service was great. High quality yet super friendly and very knowledgable. We ate from the Al a Carte menu and were recommended wine pairings.
Laurrie (apologies if we spelled your name wrong!) was a great host/waiter; personable, humorous and accommodating.
Great experience.
Keep it up!
