After going through a patch when the food was a little disappointing, this handsome ancient pub on the unfeasibly beautiful Matfield Green (complete with duck pond and cricket pavilion) appears to have found a new team in the kitchen and on a recent visit I'm...More

Yep, nice having a beer in the sunshine. Disappointing that food service finishes early on a Sunday.

This is a nice pub easy to find adjacent to the village green in Matfield. Attractive from the outside and typical of an English pub on the inside. Friendly staff and good beers. We only had drinks on this visit but the food looked good....More

After years of driving past and wondering what this pub was like we finally stopped to find out. And glad we did too! We pass through Matfield to visit family so time critical. On Friday we were going elsewhere and without time constraint went in...More

Good food which was very much better than your usual pub food. We really enjoyed our meal here which had some interesting additional 'twists'. The service was welcoming and friendly but everything was a tad slow due to stretched staffing for which they apologised. Well...More

As always Gem and Rob always deliver. Fantastic food and also a great selection of bitters. Also a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Always a pleasure to go too.

This is a lovely venue, however, the food was a disappointment. Had the black beef that was seared and almost raw inside. The vegetables were the cheapest root vegetables one could find. Not a green bean or broccoli in sight! The main problem was it...More

Stopped here as looked like a typical country pub. Wasn't disappointed it really was such a friendly place with attentive staff and food was good. We sat and relaxed in the Sunday sunshine and chose the best seat as sun shone here all the time...More

All I can say is if I lived here it would be my local, to say I was made to feel welcome is an understatement, I popped in with a couple of pals after Cricket Nets and felt so at home I wanted to stay....More

This pub was our local until we moved to Brighton almost a year ago. We have missed the Kentish pub ambience, the food and the beers so we thought we would come back and see if it is still as good as we remember. The...More

Hi Jenny T. Ordinarily we are closed on a Monday, and open on Tuesdays from 4pm serving dinner from 6.30pm. However we do open most (but not always all) Bank Holiday Mondays from noon until 6pm. That being the case we take... More

Dear Shirley M. We have hosted parties of over 100 people, although we do have seating capacity of around 50, and we do frequently cater for tables/parties of around 15 to 20. For a "sit down meal" we would normally try to... More

The Wheelwrights Arms at Matfield is a traditional Kentish weatherboard pub. Built in 1602 as a farm building, the pub has been privately run by Rob & Gem Marshall since May 2011. We have up to 6 cask ales available on draught featuring local favourites & craft beers, together with a varied selection of good wines generally under £25 a bottle, with several options by the glass. We keep a small, frequently changing menu, prepared from fresh ingredients which we serve at lunch & dinner times, & traditional roasts on Sundays. At lunch we also offer sandwiches made from our own bread and butter churned in our own kitchen. We've sometimes been called a gastro pub, and if we are then we insist it is as much about the pub as it is the gastro. Drop in - you won't be a stranger for long.
