Speight's Ale House is a nice place if you want to have a nice beer or when you are really really hungry. ;) For our taste the meals where too big and a bit too creasy. If you like that, just go for it!

We arrived late, at 21:30 to their late night bar menu. We order chicken nuggets and fries and get a dozen of frozen supermarket nuggets with undercooked fries. It didn't taste great to say the least and it wasn't cheap either. I don't know how this restaurant's food is during the day but if you don't want to cook quality... More

Our group of nine was quickly accommodated by the staff and we all enjoyed our meals. CLose to the railway station.

The food served for a Christmas dinner work do was excellent, as were the dinning room servers. However on that particular evening the bar staff and manager were pitiful. They would not serve us at the dinning room bar and were slow out in the main bar. They even complained because they could hear us laughing and enjoying our colleagues'... More

Grand old building beautifully restored, houses the Ale House and it's tempting selection of ales and wines. Try and go at happy hour and sample some local brews. Top it off with their whitebait sandwich or blue cod deep fried in a Speights ale batter - so good I had to return the next day. Some evenings are very busy... More

Nothing too flashy, but good food. We were there during the Super Bowl and they had it playing on all the screens. It was a good lunch.

Sadly, our Tranzalpine train ride was cancelled, but the company took us across the beautiful Southern Alps on a bus. We rented a car in Greymouth, but stopped for lunch at Speight's before continuing with our journey. The seafood chowder was very rich and delicious on a chilly day. Our group also enjoyed a delicious salad, eggs Benedict with a... More

Highly recommended for a stopover pint or two. Great old pub that has been restored. Friendly staff.

We came across this establishment quite by accident and were very glad we did. The décor is modern and inviting and we sat at high tables with stools and enjoyed a really good lunch with drinks. The staff were friendly and efficient and the prices were reasonable.

We hiked for hours then ended up here. The service was great, the food is good and the building is full of history and beauty. They have extensive collection of beer and ales, of course.
