We probably shouldn't have been surprised, but Lava looks like a fairly simple cafe (a little funky). But it's got a really broad menu with some amazing options, and attentive staff who'll help with 'what's good today'. My wife had an amazing pepper salmon fillet salad with goats cheese & I had the seafood risotto. Great taste, plenty of fresh... More

Day NINE of my trip from Perth to Melbourne and I start to move West from Noble Park to St Kilda. Before checking I meet someone for lunch at Lava in Balaclava. I had chosen it for its diverse menu and booked online. When we arrived they couldn't find the online booking but as we were about the only people... More

This café is set in the midst of Carlisle St. Great friendly staff with an extensive menu. Regular spot for me and tried most things on the menu and not once disappointed. Keep up the good work guys.

After moving to the area, we decided to look around for our first lunch. This place looked nice so we decided to give it a try. Honestly, we were a little let down to find out the onion rings didn't have real onion chunks in them - it was more like what you'd get out of a packet. Same with... More

There was a group of 13 of us around the big table at the front, and we really enjoyed our visit. My food was great, and the others seemed very happy with theirs. My friend and I shared the plate of eggplant parmigiana and the dish of baked vegetables, which made a nice combination. The menu contained a good variety... More

This is such a little gem. There is a massive table at the front and if you wanted to invite 15 or so people then it is easy to accommodate them. I always love the menu. There is nothing you cannot get on there. But my fave is the Israeli platter for two. Such good value and always delicious. The... More

Recently had the potato rosti with a lovely mix of spinach leaves and cherry tomatoes covered in a tasty dressing. The staff are great, the atmosphere is relaxing and the coffee nice. What more could you want.

Menu is extensive - so much to choose from. Prices are competitive - not cheap but what you would expect to pay elsewhere too. Service - laid back and informal. Sometimes too nonchalant. Could be improved. Chilli risotto was heavily creamed - too sickening. Minced lamb shashuka was good. Coffees good. Portion sizes not too small so was good enough... More
