Visited with family for an ‘experience’ and it was. Looked at the options on the menu and then ‘chickened out’ and chose the set menu for $65, a great choice!! The whole meal consisted of combinations that you probably wouldn’t normally go for BUT without exception the entire experience was great. The service was attentive without being over bearing, courses delivered with a suitable interval, wine choices were comprehensive and the two whites we chose were good value and complimented the meal. A must to visit when in Queenstown.

Such a memorable dinner. We had the sharing menu “Trust the Wok”, with wine pairing. Every course was an adventure, with outstanding flavors, presentation, and unique. All was Polynesian-themed. Service was well-paced, as we asked for, and received, plenty of time between courses to relax and reflect on each course. Wine offerings were excellent. Portion sizes were perfect, as we ended the evening feeling quite full, yet never “stuffed”. Service was very attentive, welcoming, responsive, and professional. Considering the high-quality of the evening’s experience, we felt the cost was good value. We highly recommend the BlueKanu, particularly for a special occasion.

We’re a couple in our 60’s and were looking for somewhere to enjoy a night out recently with our adult son and his partner. Blue Kanu was recommended to us by their friends so we decided to give it a go. All four of us were blown away by the delicious food and cocktails. The service and value for money was so good that when we ate at another highly regarded Queenstown restaurant the following night we felt disappointed by comparison - Blue Kanu is by far the best dining experience we have had in Queenstown over many years. Don’t hesitate, you will love this place!

We decided for the “we feed you” menu.
Maybe we expected too much, but food was only ok but nothing special and the portions small.
As main course the spicy lamb curry was served. For us it was too spicy, very fat lamb meat, a strange mix of different textures in the dish so we couldn’t eat it and nothing else was offered. We spent 200 NZD and left unsatisfied and still hungry

Amazing food and service!
So we went during peak dinner time and no table was available (as we didn’t book because we weren’t organised) the front of house suggested coming back in an hour but no guarantee . Went back and still nothing. We heard a family coming out saying how much they loved their meal so we decided to book a table for 9.30pm.
Once we went back at 9.30 the wait staff and service was amazing. We went straight to our table.
We ordered our food . It came out hot and quickly and tasted delicious.
I highly recommend bluekanu to everyone visiting Queenstown. My only advice is to book !!! Totally worth it and can’t wait to go back

We read good reviews on this place so decided to give it a shot one evening while knocking about in Q’town for a few days.
We were greeted with “Kia ora” (greetings & good health) from the Bar man which was great to hear reo being used. But disappointingly he also used “Kia Ora” to say good bye. A quick look at the readily available Maori dictionary online would be advisable to avoid insult.
If you’re of any indigenous heritage, you may find the ‘fusion’ approach to the decor abrasive.
When we were guided to the hastily wiped table, I found a chewed rib bone at my feet. I pointed this out to our waiter, & he deemed it an appropriate approach to retrieve it & wave it at us while he discussed our evenings dining options.
We chose the chefs recommendation, which is a three course Disappointment. It generally presented and tasted as cheap takeaways, with the low point being pulled pork on prawn crackers with overly sweet bbq sauce.
But it was expensive though! So, there’s that.

Kia Ora Break the Sky!
I am the owner of Blue Kanu Restaurant and I am Maori!
I am sorry your experience was not enjoyable, I have to correct you..........................Kia Ora can be use in the maori language for many reasons, a greeting or a thank you, I would also like to say that my beautiful whanau contributed to a lot of the maori art adorning the wall and we are very proud of it and certainly don't find it "abrasive" unlike your review!

We should have been in Fiji this week instead we came to Queenstown and found our own peace of the pacific here. Food was tasty, fragrant and with the Polynesian flair, atmosphere excellent wait staff with great suggestions for the sharing of the plates. Thanks loved the grilled 🐠

I was recommended this place by somebody we met in our hotel and I must say was underwhelmed. The food was below average and the main was put on the table literally a second after the starter was taken away and felt very rushed and the food ended up going cold. The dumplings were nice to be fair but the rest wasn't anything special. We have had some amazing dining experiences in Queenstown but unfortunately this was well below par. Atmosphere was nice but food and service needs to improve

I came here because of the reviews, but after dropping a hundred dollars, there isn’t a reason I would come back. At best, the food was okay. Nothing spectacular, but every bit expensive. Coconut rice shouldn’t be just steamed rice with some dried coconut shavings on top for $5. Add some coconut water, or maybe coconut milk? The rest of the food we had was okay. Presentation is what you’re paying for, but the flavor was mild and felt uninspired. The cocktails were pretty sweet, hardly any alcohol for the price.

This was my wife's favorite dinner in Queenstown. We did the “Trust the Wok” dinner for 2. The chef will serve a selection of Blue Kanu’s favorite dishes. 4 courses which were all huge. $65 per person. Really impressed by the service here too!
We got a seat without a reservation but I would recommend making one since this place got super busy!

Lovely ambience, delicious food and great service! Everything we had to eat was so yummy! We had our 2 young kids with us and the wait staff were great recommending food they thought they would enjoy... which they did. The only thing I would say is the food was almost too quick, the entre and mains all came at a similar time and we were in and out in less than an hour... which I admit is great with kids, but isn’t cheap, and was so lovely, I would have enjoyed spending more time there :)

This is our second year celebrating Valentine's Day at Blue Kanu. The first time last year we had a trust the chef menu and we were so surprised! The food was so different and exotic and so delicious! There were quite a few different dishes, we left feeling quite full actually, it was great value for money. This time we went back and had the dumplings to start, a prawn curry with rice for main and two desserts. The prawn curry was absolutely amazing! The best ever. Our first dessert with sago and coconut was so delicious that we had to order another one, so we tried the sponge cake too. Everything was spectacular! Amazing service too. I would totally recommend it to anyone who wants to try something different and special.

Had dinner with my partner at Blue Kanu last night. Had the shiitake mushroom rolls, Korean fried chicken and whole fish (snapper). All three dishes were delicious!
Service was particularly delightful, we were greeted and served by Maddie, who went so far as to debone our entire fish as we are rather inexperienced in this practice!
Overall deserving of a 5 star review. Thanks Maddie!!

This place is excellent at acknowledging the customer and provides probably the best example of this I have seen in AUS/NZ.
Food is interesting and different and worth trying a selection of dishes to find what suits your taste. We adored the goat buns ! Not so enamoured with the beef cheeks but that’s the way to find the favourites. Also we liked the shiitake mushroom rolls and the chicken.
Overall this is a fun place and great to party (even tho we were not)

We went to Blue Kanu expecting something different and boy! did we get it. We were given the choice of sharing table food or mains - the waiter recommended getting two sharing meals and a main for which he without asking brought two plates and cutlery. We chose a salad with chicken and a raw fish dish and then the duck with mangos and avocado dish. They might not sound stunning but they were. The flavours all blended so well (though I couldn't really taste the avocado).
My husband paying for it said it just got points off for asking on the bill did we want to give a tip. Being NZers and objecting to tipping on principle, we were surprised to see that, but a relative said it was quite a common practice in Queenstown.
