I had always thought of Best Cafe as a upmarket fish and chip place but over the course of a couple of visits recently I can see it has been made into so much more than that. It has become a superb seafood restaurant -...More

Absolutely outstanding! A walk back in time to a simple era where the food was sourced down the road, cooked fresh and delivered with a smile!! The fish was coated in a light tempura style batter and cooked to perfection, the Blue Cod is melt...More

The Best Café is essentially a fish-and chips sit-down or take-out place with good, local fish. Portions are quite adequate and the food is good. I don’t quite understand its current high Trip Advisor restaurant rating. Inside the décor is a throwback to a fairly...More

Must stop here when visiting the area. Open since 1932, and you can see why. Service is sharp and quick, food came out hot and hmmm good. Fresh fish clearly. Make this. Stop when here and we will return.

Recently visited and enjoyed the Windows looking onto the street while enjoying fish-n-chips and the local drink, L&P (try it!). Just steps from the train station it is a great place to eat while downtown.

Established in 1932 the Best Cafe is a Dunedin icon. It has been through World War II and the Great Depression and has changed very little over the last 85 years it has been trading. I am very lucky to be running a restaurant that was originally started by my great-grandfather and then passed down to his son and family through until the 1980's. The following proprietors kept the traditions alive to maintain the Best Cafe's great reputation. As the proud owner of our old family restaurant my aim is to provide a truly unique dining experience, one where we can provide old fashioned, friendly service alongside a delicious plate of fresh, local seafood, golden hand cut chips and the best Bluff Oysters in New Zealand. If you want to take a trip down Nostalgia Lane and taste some traditional New Zealand fare then this is the place to visit.
